Sounds more like some people Conor paid a lot of money to lie without telling his lawyers about it, then his lawyers did a fucking shoddy job investigating their completely fictional story, eventually realizing that they'd done a fucking shoddy job only after already making representations to the court. Just speculation, of course, but this really sounds a lot more like an attempt by Conor to take advantage of the fact that the only lawyers who would take his case were complete idiots than like something instigated by the lawyers themselves. Lawyers may do a lot of seedy, stupid things without any client direction, but this kind of obvious perjury isn't really on that list.

It could also mean that they are corrupt. A very rich man accused of a serious crime by a working class woman. Wouldn't be the first time police tried to sweep it under the rug.
