Crime Maine shooting - 18 dead

Looks like he took the Pussy’s way out. Instead, he could have had a shootout with police and he decided to swallow a bullet like the ultimate bitch. First, he goes into a bowling alley and shoots deaf people, then he shoots himself like a real fucking pussy

Good I'm glad he killed himself it's saves us from a trail where they try to get him off saying he was insane.

As far as gun law changes with more gun control, let's see why the laws in effect already didn't prevent this. Maybe there was a number of people that failed to do what they should have to take this guys guns and maybe force commit him.

But I'll bet the anti 2nd crowd doesn't want to hear about that when this is seen as a good opportunity to get more laws. If the laws would have prevented this doesn't matter to them as long as they can get more laws passed.

Maine has pretty lax gun laws.

Maybe people are tired of mass murder and lax gun laws that make it easy to obtain weapons that give people the ability to kill / injure 10-20-30 people in seconds.

The dude was a army reserve member and a fire arms instructor, what gun law do you propose that would've prevented him from having an effective combat weapon that wouldn't also prevent EVERYBODY else from having an effective combat weapon????

The 2A is about having a combat ready citizenship (well regulated militia), not duck hunting and protecting your home from midnight prowlers.

I wish people would just be honest and support repealing the 2A, at least that would be a consistent argument.

In this particular time, we are told that any amount of murders by guns are acceptable as the price to be paid for 2nd amendment rights. So it figures that we will continue to dehumanize one another and accept killings as more and more routine and a part of the culture here, across the board.

I haven't seen anybody take that stance. I've been among the most stanch 2A amendment supporters on this forum and I've routinely noted that there is a line where personal safety would trump the long-term security that an armed citizenship affords.

But we are VERY FAR from that line. Gun murder is still very rare, lower than it was 50 years ago.

Gun violence is horrible, and if we banned guns or made them VERY hard to obtain we would see a radical reduction in gun violence.

But at what cost?

The writers of the constitution feared tyranny far more than they feared their neighbor... and we should to. FAR more civilians have died or had their freedom stripped from them because they DIDN'T have a gun than because another civilian did.

The compromise that I would impose if I magically had my way:

1) Ban purchase and possession of all firearms and ammo for any person under the age of 25
2) Ban all concealable firearms, this would include handguns and all short barrelled rifles
3) Limit magazine size to standard capacity (30rds)
4) No grandfathering in illegal firearms, people must apply for an expensive special license, or sell them back to the government. A citizen shouldn't be armed less than his neighbor because they were born too late.

Doing these things would drastically increase public safety and reduce gun crime, while maintaining our 2nd amendment right for citizens to possess weapons for defense of freedom.
I think those are pretty reasonable compromises......But I disagree with #1. If you can handle a firearm in the military at 18, I don't see it as reasonable that you'd have to wait until 25 to own your own. And it's not like these shootings are done by just a bunch of 18 and 20 year olds. Guns should be/are supposed to be used for protection, so it doesn't make sense that you'd have to wait until you're 25 to protect yourself.
Unfortunately, we never can seem to have reasonable discussions on this because people think that just yelling "2nd amundmunt" wins the argument. I don't think that many people are really for banning guns full stop. But the conversation gets turned into that whenever someone wants to add some common sense regulation.

As I said, I'm not even suggesting, or even think that a ban on guns is necessary, or even addresses the problem. But we're putting feelings over common sense here when we keep referencing a line that was written a few hundred years ago by men that lived in an entirely different world than we do today. There's no way they could have predicted how weapons would look like today, or how they'll continue to evolve in the future.
Freedom has to come with responsibilities. I think we need to do more than just banning stuff, we need to promote healthy gun culture, and not think of guns as toys, or simply as some tool to scare people or the government.

The media made it the sexy weapon of choice .

this might be one of the funniest things I’ve read. You’re not alone, lots of people say this exact same thing. But i really don’t get it..what is the media supposed to do? What should they do differently? No one has a good answer on that.. maybe you do?

the firearms laws in Maine are flimsy as fuck.

Some tragic event just happened and people just have this kneejerk reaction of always turning it into a political debate, it's pathetic.

If this happened once in a while, early 90s to prior, I would agree….but this is so common anymore. So common, I know some folks that have died or been wounded in some of them. I’ve had friends die or get wounded in the Aurora movie shooting (when I lived in Denver by that Joker wannabe), and the Las Vegas concert shooting (co-workers)… so yeah, you start to develop ‘takes’ on it. I’m not trying to evoke sympathy… it’s that it isn’t unique. Hundreds of people die every year in these rage killings of 4 or more. It’s not pathetic if it’s real to people

If you compare them to where you live then they are. However plenty of states have about the same.

27 states have constitutional carry. Not that this mattered with the weapon he had.

They are about with a lot of other states with other laws.

But if you base you opinion of California or New York and some other democrat run states the yes they don't have the mass of laws they do.

Shit like this will happen again and again the US, guaranteed. Mentally ill people with access to high powered guns is recipe for disaster.

I mean, it probably wouldn't have gone the way you think it would if he had a shootout with the cops unless there was a tac unit involved. With his training and expertise he would have likely turned beat cops into Swiss cheese. Him offing himself was the best possible outcome. Spares officers from death, injury , or the trauma of killing someone (unless it isn't traumatic when you kill a shit bag.)

Too bad he's dead. He deserved to face the music and explain himself. Fucking coward.

Basically, he was a mentally ill person, wh'd recently been laid off... he bought those guns sameday and killed people. This one isn't complicated - people who buy longbarrel semi-autos should also have some sort of pysch eval / green light on mental health.

He already should have been flaged with what happened before he did this. That is were the problem is.

You want everyone that wants to but a semi auto rifle to get a note from doctor before they can buy one?

That's not going to work.

I'd agree this guy shouldn't have had guns after his first mental breakdown. Can't see how every gun buyer in the country can get a psychological evaluation though.
