Given that the only people at the scene to be carrying firearms were the police officers themselves, it doesn't exactly take Dr Gil Grissom to figure out what happened.

Agreed. I'm not going to Monday Morning Quarterback the coppers who had to deal with such an extreme situation.

It's a tragedy, but the fault lies entirely with Mr Holy War. If he hadn't attacked the Synagogue in the first place, the coppers wouldn't have had to open fire.
