Crime Maine shooting - 18 dead

For those calling for a ban of assault weapons? Why do they think he would have killed less if he had been using a Glock or any other semi-auto handgun?

An AR-15 long-rifle, like he used, is a horrible weapon choice for close quarters combat of unarmored targets in an indoor space. Targets can see you coming a mile away, and you're far easier to disarm than if you're using a shorter weapon like a handgun.

I would estimate that had this shooter, a trained firearms instructor, had used a handgun he would have been able to take down a lot more targets before they realized what is going on and scattered.

The reason the government focuses on assault rifles is two fold:

1) Semi-auto rifles are designed to defeat body-armor, which the public doesn't wear, but the government enforces do.
2) They know it won't make any difference in homicide rates, which will allow them to move on to banning all guns.

Because guns are used in self defense approximately 1.5 to 2.5 million times a year in self defense with the overwhelming majority of the time never being fired.

The exact number is debatable. The 1.5 come from a study by the Clinton administration and the 2.5 is from an NRA study.

Then you have the hunting numbers as it is the main supporter of game management including the money needed to keep wild life population protection and preservation.

That doesn't include sport target sports.

Then there is the strongest reason the 2nd amendment and its purpose.

You're definitely doing something wrong when you're the #1 country in mass shootings.

Any ideas?

we have urban areas where certain folks are shooting each other every day
It’s not citizens, it’s criminals - we don’t have enough jails, prisons, rehabs or mental health centers to change anything or enforce the current laws-‘let’s not get into our borders that drugs freely flow though that drives most of the crime
I live in a constitutional carry state- ima relatively safe area, but I carry every day because i never know when shit is going to crack off

‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens (theonion.com)

LEWISTON, ME—In the hours following a violent rampage in Maine in which a lone attacker killed at least 16 individuals and injured numerous others, citizens living in the only country where this kind of mass killing routinely occurs reportedly concluded Wednesday that there was no way to prevent the massacre from taking place. “This was a terrible tragedy, but sometimes these things just happen and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them,” said Idaho resident Peter Carter, echoing sentiments expressed by tens of millions of individuals who reside in a nation where over half of the world’s deadliest mass shootings have occurred in the past 50 years and whose citizens are 20 times more likely to die of gun violence than those of other developed nations. “It’s a shame, but what can we do? There really wasn’t anything that was going to keep this individual from snapping and killing a lot of people if that’s what they really wanted.” At press time, residents of the only economically advanced nation in the world where roughly two mass shootings have occurred every month for the past eight years were referring to themselves and their situation as “helpless.”

Yeah, that's great.

What about the rest of the gun related homicides?

Because it is necessary to shoot and kill in some situations, both animals and or a person.

Because you are basing you view on how something looks rather then it operation.

Unless you propose to ban all semi auto weapons as assault weapons.

Yeah, I'm all for it.

My point was that the "fair/unfair" argument is a terrible one. We're talking about high powered weapons that are easily obtainable that are used to kill people, and we're talking about what's "fair"? How does one even make that argument in the face of a story like this where 18 people were murdered?

How does a person with mental illness that wants to kill others and themselves get deterred by another guy with a gun when his whole mission is to kill and get killed?

I'm not even of the mind that things need to be flat out banned, per se, but these arguments that are often used don't hold water. There's way too much of a lax gun culture in the US with people thinking of guns as toys and extensions of their manhood.

Gun violence is horrible, and if we banned guns or made them VERY hard to obtain we would see a radical reduction in gun violence.

But at what cost?

The writers of the constitution feared tyranny far more than they feared their neighbor... and we should to. FAR more civilians have died or had their freedom stripped from them because they DIDN'T have a gun than because another civilian did.

The compromise that I would impose if I magically had my way:

1) Ban purchase and possession of all firearms and ammo for any person under the age of 25
2) Ban all concealable firearms, this would include handguns and all short barrelled rifles
3) Limit magazine size to standard capacity (30rds)
4) No grandfathering in illegal firearms, people must apply for an expensive special license, or sell them back to the government. A citizen shouldn't be armed less than his neighbor because they were born too late.

Doing these things would drastically increase public safety and reduce gun crime, while maintaining our 2nd amendment right for citizens to possess weapons for defense of freedom.

But none of these shootings which happen literally every weekend , used any “assault guns”

https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-shootings-this-weekend-violence-police/13881674/

the hypocrisy and mendacity is puke worthy

IMO, it shouldn't make any difference if a kid is shot and killed randomly by a "mass shooter" or carelessly by gangbangers.

Innocent little kids being shot and killed in gang gunfire is far more of a problem than kids getting shot in school. More innocent children (I am talking innocent children, not 15 year old gangbangers) are shot in just Chicago every year than all of the school shootings in the country combined.

Many countries have areas where people are shooting themselves everyday. But the US is the only country where kids get killed at school regularly. What do you thing is the factor?

There has been quite an uptick in school shootings since social media became a large part of everyone's lives.

Coincidence?

I personally think it’s culture
If you understand psychology and what drives sociopaths and psychopaths, killing children is the ultimate act to show your utter contempt for humanity because you take out the innocent and harmless
It’s a thing in psychology- all professionals know it

All developed countries have access to social media. Must be something else.

Probably not
People do crazy shot for “likes”

we are such social creatures- about roughly 3% of people are actual psychopaths

No there’s just different kind of violence
Stabbings in the UK are off the chart- also in Europe but uk has a serious knife problem because of gun control and culture

Yeah, but there is something else going on in the US.

There are 100's of videos of kids in the US getting the shit kicked out of them because of something that they said on social media. I am not seeing videos like this coming from other countries.

True, but there are psychos in every country.

I agree gun culture has something to do with it.
