Trump is very confident that he will win elections and will be capable to do POTUS duties next 4 years. He is thinking that even after this term he might get some other post...like speaker of House or different position like this. Trump does think that he is in very good condition and shape.

I think they just needed anyone semi coherent to be viable option for people who want to vote against Trump to vote for. There are a lot of people who don't want Trump but we're probably too concerned about the state of Biden to vote for him.
