I think this is 100% true.
I think he absolutely needs to take Gane down, keep him there to either sub/tko him or just long enough to win rounds until an eventual decision.

Jones IMO cannot win this fight in a primarily kickboxing match. I also don't think he'll be able to have much success getting a hold of Gane to rough him up in the clinch or against the cage as Cyril is extremely elusive and crafty.

I still feel like Jon will be able to take Gane down and finish him but if Gane can defend some early takedowns we could see a super interesting scenario..

Thoughts???

Yeah, the age might be a factor.
I doubt it though. He's only 3 years older than Gane. At heavyweight, that isn't much
He's way older in fight years though. He's been in the UFC for 15 years and fighting against the best of the best at the top for over a decade. That will age a fighter. Gane on the other hand only has 12 MMA fights and hasn't even been training for a decade. He's definitely in his prime (or even still on the way up) while Jones is quite clearly on the decline.

I agree with the assessment- If Jones just stands and strikes with Gane he's in trouble. He definitely needs to have some success in the grappling in order to win this one.

The problem if Jon gets close he will get hit hard and Gane knows that Jon wants to wrestle so he will be ready

To be fair, people have said similar sentiments in every one of his fights.
Can't wait to see how this fight plays out.

Yeah great point. Fight years are completely different.
Although, I still don't count that as much of a factor in this matchup as some are.
I just think, stylistically, it's not a bad matchup for Jon.
I hate to MMATH it but seeing Francis take Gane down and keep him there, I can't help but to think Jon can do the same.

Gane never beat anyone close to Jon's level on the feet, I think people will be surprised how Jon does in the standup, similar to the Volk/Islam narrative before the fight

Gane never beat anyone close to Jones on the feet? Lol casual

i dont think he has to wrestle, but it would be ill advised to fight gane at his strongest suit, especially given than gane is naturally larger and probably stronger.

He needs to wrestle for sure. Keeping distance wont help him here because Gane can cover it easy.

I interested in the clinch game, I wonder if Gane can hang there?

By fight mileage though, there's a massive difference. GSP had a very similar trajectory, ruled his division for so long that mileage caught up with him, and he had a deathly close fight with Hendricks (much like Jones did with Reyes).

Problem is GSP came back to what he knew was a weak champ with Bisping. I am very confident that Gane is no Bipsing, in that he provides a lot more of a unique and difficult challenge. If Jones' wrestling doesn't work I strongly believe he is going to get pieced up on the feet.

Yeah how much if that was ge actually fighting? Suspended or otherwise inactive for a lot if it. And I guess he didn't take too much damage over his career, only a few fights. Be interesting to see

That's the beauty of having a good ground game. He can threaten a takedown but go up top with a head kick instead.
that's a solid plan against hws that do not move like gane... Gane won't be open for a head kick, I think Jon needs to find the clinch... That's going to be hard to do against Gane because of the way that he moves. However if Jon can score some damage he maybe able to disrupt Ganes movement which will lead to a Jones victory..

Tough fight to predict
