Now, you say Gane was the correct fight to take due to him being #1 + Interim Champ (which he wasn't).

Gane had his number with counters which is more dangerous than on the outside because it's force of stepping in plus the force of the strike. So he has his numbers and in the worst possible way. And that's likely why Tom got a bloody nose.
