Social Is "Woke" going too far?

I just know that anti-woke people are generally bothered by things that do not affect their lives for the most part. It’s a strange way to go about things. As far as entertainment content is concerned, there’s plenty of content to choose from. If you don’t like a black James Bond (a fictional character that was partly inspired by a Dominican man named Porfirio Rubirosa), then don’t watch it. I use that example because it’s been said they’re considering a black actor for 007.

Those are two of the greatest movies of all time, the movies that people are complaining about are forgettable trash having no redeeming qualities other than a woke agenda, which its selft is only a redeeming quality for a small minority. If these current movies actually put in the effort to make an original engaging story, you can put in whoever you want in the movie and it wont be an issue just like it wasn't an issue back then.

Theres problems on either side of the argument. The right side will have people screaming about any sort of diverse casting sometimes, or any kind of criticism of Trump. And then the left will just pretend like re-casting historical figures as black people is perfectly ok and has no agenda or argue that past movies that had female leads were "always woke", etc

Like almost anything, its a case by case basis. Sometimes the messaging and ham fisted attempts at injecting contemporary commentary is terrible. Sometimes even going out of your way to hire a "diverse cast" is perfectly fine if the result is good.

The issue has sort of become a hot button with knee jerk reactions from either side. Theres definitely going to be terrible woke crap in entertainment and its gonna suck. Call it out but dont act like anything that has the slightest amount of themes injected into it is some sort of poison pill you have to swallow. Likewise, the other side should accept that some of this messaging has gotten ridiculous.

Re: The whole casting of the with in the new OZ movie. I dont honestly remember the criticism of a black woman being casted as the witch. Not saying it doesnt exist, but I just didnt see it. I know there was a lot of backlash because she was complaining about some fan art for the poster being racist and people thought she was ridiculous (because she was).

Who are these they’s that decided your DEI examples? On Reddit, for instance, I overwhelmingly see anyone who says these specific shows are woke is down voted to oblivion.

Maybe you have an article or something? I just don’t think that many people are bitching about some of these things this thread is making a deal over.

Wrong. I've seen insecure men trashing every single movie with a female lead in action films. They can't believe a woman can be badass, but they have no problem if a lawn gnome like Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher.

I don't use the term "woke," but if I did, I would be referring to changes and choices made for no other reason than to artificially increase diversity. There's nothing wrong, for example, with a movie that casts a female as a lead when there's no specific reason to have one. Rogue One didn't need the protagonist to be a woman, but they chose to do so, and the movie worked out fine. That's not woke.

However, when you do things like purposely changing the race of a major character, such as in the live action remake of The Little Mermaid, it's pretty hard to not view that as useless pandering. Similarly, when having a female protagonist is the only effort you put into a movie (Captain Marvel, Ghostbusters 2016), it's not "progressive" to do so, and it's not "bigoted" when viewers dislike it.

I think it'll all sort itself out in the end. We've been seeing the effects of "go woke, go broke" for some time now, and I suspect in ten or twenty years we'll look back on this time, laugh, and be glad it's all behind us.
