Social Is "Woke" going too far?

I do not care when they change the race or ethnicity of a fictional character. I always question the motives of people that take exception to it. I find it no different than when they change the time period of the original work. I understand why they are doling it just doesn’t matter to me. I do find it lazy and unoriginal though.

If you find it unoriginal and lazy, you should care. That is the point. The quality suffers because it has no originality, and it is lazy. Making little Orphan Annie black and making Daddy Warbucks Jamie Foxx was LAZY and unoriginal and it sucked because of that. That era saw these lazy film makers do it with a ton of properties---A Black Annie, A Black About Last Night, A Black Can't Buy Me Love, A Black Cinderella. They all sucked because....lazy and unoriginal. All these woke writers in Hollywood can't write a new script, with new ideas featuring people of color? They need to find whoever created The Spider-Verse. This world is diverse as hell and done amazingly. Paid homage to original, made sense as it who and how it happened.

It’s pretty telling when someone like you gets bent out of shape about a change in the race of a fictional character but not other alterations of the source material like time period.

I just came back from a friends place. Topic of choice today was "woke" movies. Now even though I agreed with much of what was said, I began to think to myself....

What would make people happy when it came to roles that people played?

For example. The movie Wicked came out with a pretty diverse cast. I believe one of the witches is portrayed by a person of color who is also lesbian. The hate was strong. Now....even though I would probably never watch this, I began to question some of the backlash. I mean, shes playing a green witch...the supposed wicked one no less. So...wtf is the big deal? Id kinda understand if the lesbian black chick was playing the good witch...the right would lose their minds. This however left me scratching my head.

It seems nowadays, anytime a person of color, lgbtq, a woman or God forbid, all of the above gets a lead role, its woke. Wtf defines woke now? Its confusing. I thought it was people that specifically tried to make films confronting certain social issues. Could be a movie about a female black detective....woke.

Some of it I get it....i dont want the message smeared in my face with political or social commentary. Meanwhile, im left scratching my head sometimes thinking why people are so pissed at a specific movie.

Odd times.

I haven't heard anyone complain about the actress and didn't even know that she was gay until reading your post.

Daniel Kaluuya? At first glance maybe doesn't seem like he has the polish of someone like Elba but imo Kaluuya is one of the most underrated actors alive and could pull it off. Have never seen him in anything that I didn't think he was great in.

He's a good actor but he doesn't have the aura that a James Bond requires. You need a mature, handsome dude for the role and Kaluuya is too boyish. Someone like Taye Diggs about 15-20 years ago could have done it.

No they wouldn't most people aren't as stupid as you guys. Those are two of the greatest movies of all time, the movies that people are complaining about are forgettable trash having no redeeming qualities other than a woke agenda, which its selft is only a redeeming quality for a small minority. If these current movies actually put in the effort to make an original engaging story, you can put in whoever you want in the movie and it wont be an issue just like it wasn't an issue back then.

Its funny they say its about "shitty writing"(wink wink) yet they never seem to complain about the actual writing just the casting choices.

Yeah, maybe. I feel like Kaluuya could pull it off, but admittedly I'm biased. I've just liked him a lot in everything I've seen him in so maybe I'm trying to shoehorn him into a role that doesn't fit.

There was a lot of griping about Prey in the Mayberry if I recall, ahead of release.

I think in this case people were in a uproar before the movie was released assuming it was going to be a woke movie, when it came out and it turned out to be a good movie i think that uproar died entirely

Isnt the point of snow white to be....well.. white, lol. This is what I mean. In some ways, im like...why the fck would they even do that. It doesnt make sense. You can create a whole new disney character, which they do routinely. Why mess with a classic character like that?

Now, they wanna introduce afro-puerto rican version of spiderman...cool! Go for it. Things change in comics every year, especially with all the multiverse stuff. But they kept og spiderman and didnt try to outright replace him either.

I didn't even care that she wasn't this pure white.

What bothered most people initially was her extremely arrogant, rude and entitled interviews about the series. Has nothing to do with woke. She's just super unlikable.
