Is the JDM hypetrain dead?

Still a fun fighter to watch. At the end of the day, he still beat a guy on short notice who was a bad stylistic matchup after cutting weight twice in one week and doing incredibly dumb shit the whole damn fight. It wasn't an extremely impressive showing but he still notched the W and got shown some things he needs to work on. Certainly not the worst thing that can happen to a developing promising young fighter.

Nah. It really wasn't that bad. He defended the takedowns easily when not giving them up to go for a guillotine. He will learn and fight smarter from now on.

Don't forget he ran through a Dagi wrestler a few fights ago so he clearly has some serious TDD when he uses it.

Dead? No. In my opinion, Bassil deserves praise more so than JDM deserves discredit. I felt the wrong guy got their hand raised. In the 2nd round, JDM did outland Bassil, but Bassil did crack the fuck out of him a good amount of times and had almost 2 minutes of top positional control. I felt that cumulatively should have had more weight. I do give JDM credit for his 3rd round performance though -- he looked great in the 3rd, and showed that he isn't bad afterall in the ground. In fact, defensively I felt he was solid on the ground -- he took very minimal damage and didn't give up his side control all too much. His biggest problem was his strategic decisions going for ill-advised guillotines. Overall, I was maybe a little underwhelmed with JDM, but let's not act like Bassil doesn't have some potential, albeit if even a bit unrefined.

I can't understand the argument for two minutes of top control doing absolutely nothing with it winning a round when you got thoroughly out-struck and visibly hurt several times in the three minutes on the feet.

Fair enough -- I'm not going to be the guy to try and change your mind. I'll say this though just so you know where I'm coming from -- I give credence for progress towards finishing a fight -- takedowns and top positional control = progress to me, so long as the top person isn't having to survive submission attempts or getting outstruck from the bottom.

I feel that it's a different category altogether than damage, but I can see arguments (possibly yours) as to why my idea is flawed. Being on top isn't objectively superior by itself, many would argue -- that's where my score of 10/9 for Bassil is weak. I would say, however, that Bassil did land some big shots, despite being sloppy ones -- they snapped JDM's neck back. It didn't buckle him or anything, but I felt he stood his own in the pocket, albeit not very advisable. Bassil seems like a dog.

Also, thanks for replying and being respectful in disagreement. I love discussions such as this, but sometimes folks make me feel uncomfortable when in dissension.

Hafez not only showed the path, he lit the tiki torches and mowed.

2-1 Hafez

Nope. The hypetrain lives on.

weird fight, JDM was on some jiri level low iq fighting, this fight could have been easier, still, i believe he won fairly on damage.
he needs to think better in his future fights, his TDD is solid.
hafez has good stamina, strenght and seem to have good hands, which is weird because he has a bum's record.
need to see more of him in the ufc

Numerous times he could of finished the fight..disappointing, especially as it cost me 700 lol

His fight IQ is questionable....as soon as the first guillotine failed because your opponent defended it well, he should've abandoned it. Your opponent shoots a double leg the first chance, defended the sub...it's a telltale sign that he knows how to defend subs well...JDM still has great striking though....i hope he learns from that fight....

The Arab guy has a high energy style so might not have been at his optimal fitness level with the short notice. If he didn't gas so hard he'd have won easily.

Hafez turned out tobe way better than we thought. His chin is solid and cardio held up for two rounds whilst a short notice fight.
