Is 170LB Division going to be run by 6'2+ guys?

Weird day to make that argument given Dan Hooker is 6" and Arman is 5,7" separated by 5 inches

A fortnight ago the GOAT was 5,7" and everyone is talking about them moving to welterweight

DC is a double champ at heavyweight and is an inch taller than Islam

Former champ Matt Serra is 5,6"

Islam steamrolls Morales and Garry, only Shavkat has a chance

Also O'Malley and Usman are 5,11"

No evidence height matters, if anything it's the contrary
Shavkat has no more of a chance than Ian Garry.

I noticed the other week, that the WWs I googled were all 6'1-6'3. Dunno if that's new or if the distribution is the same as 10-20 years ago. Garry, Leon, Shavkat, Morales, Prates, Malott - all tall. JDM, Burns, Neal, Brady, Usman are below or just 6'0 though.

GSP was 5'10, Hendricks 5'9, Koschek 5'10, Lawler 5'11, Daley 5'9, Alves 5'10. Kampmann 6'0, Hardy 6'0, Fitch 6'0. Condit and Diaz were taller, like 6'1-6'2.

Height does matter when choosing a weight class, ofc. As does frame. Max is tall, but a smaller frame. Same for Sandhagen. Along with other things, like preferred/developed style of fighting and ease of diet (see GSP struggling to eat enough for MW).

It could be that weight cutting has improved so guys are able to be a little bigger.

Weight divisions keep growing size. Look at Buckley, even struggling at WW. That build clearly hasn't aged great. Lanklets win over time.
Do they? Because short stocky dudes are running shit at 155

And the only lanklet who ever won and defended at 170 is Edwards

Ian Garry, Shavkhat, Michael Morales. These guys could all beat Islam Mackachev, and they are all huge. It seems like the future of welterweight is 6'2+.

Islam Mackachev is too short to defend his title more than 2 times in Welterweight division, only against an easy opponent like Usman whos 5'9.

Islam beating means a lot if he can which i know he can.

Honestly I didn't even know how he was listed. I said that because next to Charles who's 5'10 he seemed kinda 5'8 but that's hard to be accurate just by it. Depends on shoes and various things.

All good mate.

UFC is frequently dishonest with their height stats and it makes it tricky to determine the truth. Even Volkanovski stated he was shocked at Ilias size when they met face to face that he was much shorter than expected, with Volk (5'6 on a good day) saying Ilia was his size.

Ilia is quite a bit smaller than most folks realize and I suspect he may utilize lifts sometimes as men of shorter heights often do.

For a random example- Israel Adesanya is listed at 6'4 on any UFC tale of the tape or in his fighter data on their site.... however if you look up his tale of the tape for his kickboxing matches prior to his UFC run he is usually listed at 6'3 which I believe to be the more accurate number.

Common stuff in sports. Every high school football team in the US pads the height and weight of their players for the team programs and the pre season rosters and press stuff. I'm sure many other sports at various levels do the same.

I'll give you Topuria, but LW has some huge guys. Gaethje is 5'11. Dustin is 5'9. Olivera is 5'10. Islam is 5'10.
GSP is 5'10. I'm just saying he'd fit in more there.

Usman is 6ft. Khamzat 6'2. Shavkat 6'1. JDM 5'11. Ian Garry 6'3. Michael Morales 6ft.

I dunno, guess there is Topuria or Chandler as short LWs, but just in general most guys today are as lanky as they can get.

i always viewed it as:

lightweight = 5'10"+
welterweight = 6'0"+
middleweight = 6'1"+
light heavyweight = 6'2"+
heavyweight = 6'4"+
Yes the best welterweight of all time who is 5'10"...not to mention lightweight champions Khabib, McGregor, dos Anjos, Alvarez, Topuria, Henderson...none of whom are even 5'10" 😄

Classic sherdogger seemingly obsessed with height.

If topuria is 5'8 I'm packing a footlong.

If we are squeezing in inches then fuck it.

Ilia is listed by UFC as 5'7 and based on the data that is being quite generous.

Most UFC guys are 1-2 some even 3 inches shorter than their listed height
Topuria is 5'6" he's a midget, same height as his brother.

Being tall and long has it's advantages but midgets like the Topuria Bros have proven you can be shorter, slower, you can still press forward nonstop and sit down on your punches, and force a firefight, as long as you have the chin for it.
Ian Garry looked like a giraffe next to Belal, but Belal landed clean on him over all 3 rounds. And Ian is as evasive as they come.

Arman too

Absolutely not man.. again.. 155 means you’re fighting at 170-180.. that is a healthy weight for a 6 footer.

The fact that your categorizing guys who are 5’10 175 at 10% bodyfat as “lanky” is hilarious

All those guys would be considered short and stocky if they were in boxing.. where 155 is exclusively 6’+ and the best fighter is 6’ 5

Oh shit Stefan Struve the goat and mark hunt some bum

Generally there's a lot more legs and back muscles on those MMA fighters tho

Yeah again.. in no world is 5’ 9 175 absolutely shredded “lanky”

And Illia and Arman will probably be holding that strap for the next 3 years anyways

Not a hard rule at all. Merab soundly beat two 5'10"-5'11" guys while being 5'6".

The weight class limits and cuts will always be a trade off for the tall guys who fight at the lighter classes.

Gary admits he has to keep himself naturally light to fight at WW without doing hard cuts, but I can tell he trades off some natural power and muscle doing that.
There’s an ideal muscle to natural frame ratio

The interesting question is how much excessive muscle helps in a street fight

For instance — I started out 5’ 7 145

Now I’m 5’ 6 215. With maybe 20 pounds of fat.. some water weight and a whole lotta muscle

Almost 71 inch reach. Like Islam

I assume that someone my weight who’s 215 6’ would destroy me. Even with the same amount of body fat

Now I don’t know how much weight I need on em before the odds favor me. I know it’s higher then 170 — that’s how much my lil bro weighs and I can throw him around like paper Mario
