The bloodied nose during round1 is what set off the narrative that Tom was going to lose and Tom is a quitter. It's also why Aspinall is overcompensating when it comes to damage control to help salvage his reputation as the baddest man on the planet. Had Tom been relatively unharmed (no sign of visible damage) when the eye poke had happen, everyone would have been fine with him bowing out against Cyril. I also believe that Dana would have had a more neutral stance at the press conference which would also damper people's criticism of Aspinall not wanting to continue.
