You realise that you do not need the IBJJF certification in order to compete in any IBJJF events.

All you need is your $35 IBJJF ID card.

You can get your ID card without being IBJJF certified.

For example, I am IBJJF certified and I also have a IBJJF membership card.

My friend is not IBJJF certified but I signed for his IBJJF membership card application (even thought he is 1 degree higher than me). He is now an IBJJF member and his card said BB 1 degree.

According to the IBJJF website, there is only 2 thousands BBs that are certified by them in the world. and that includes their USA and Brasil overseas etc..

But to answer your question, in order to register a school with the IBJJF, you need to be IBJJF certified.

Maybe a IBJJF member could register his own team but I do not have the answer as I am certified so I never had that problem.

It kind of make sense that the IBJJF would only recognise school run by their certified BB or at least a BB IBJJF member instead of recognising any random dude deciding to claim to be a BJJ BB.

I had to register my own gym after getting forced out of my old affiliation because they tripled my monthly affiliation fee which I declined and became independent.

Otherwise, I was a "loyal" for many years.

Unless you're Sam Osman, at which point they fuck you regardless. They tried to get me between ranks. As if that's legit.

Knowing about all the possible dramas, I did one thing to protect myself.

At brown belt, I became a IBJJF member. I emailed all my certificates and once they accept me, I paid USD 35 for the plastic card.

Then I told my instructor that IF he was to promote me to BB one day (I did NOT ask for a promotion), I will want to get my IBJJF certification as a BB.

I asked him if he was entitled to sign for my application.

He said yes but he also added that I do need IBJJF certification as he will always sign for me and my students etc..

But being the independent person that I am, I always wanted to be able to stand on my 2 foots and be able to sign for my own students.

So I became an IBJJF certified BB because I ensure that my instructor could provide with the endorsement.

If IBJJF certification is that important to you, seek to train under an IBJJF 2 degrees certified by all means to avoid any disappointment.

I think the person that "tried" to promote you to BB was in no position to promote you to BB and he tried to scam you into paying for "his" affiliation fees.
