War Wagon Gaethje walks through Paddy.

I would love to see it, but the Chandler fight really showcased how much Paddy has worked on range management, and he has a very dynamic kicking ability that tends to get overlooked. Justin got demolished by spinning kicks to the midsection and face by Max. I think there is a non zero chance we see Paddy point fight until Justin charges in and gets subbed. This could be a genuine passing ships scenario.

I'll be rooting for Gaethje to win by a devastating KO. I doubt it happens though and he may not even win the thing.

The irony is that the take that Paddy beats him pretty easily is Wikipedia analysis.

You're buying into the UFCs carefully controlled matchmaking that has gradually eased the easiest possible route for a belt.

The presumption that Pimblett is a grappler at the level of Khabib or will suddenly refine his striking defense to sustain the pressure to takedown against a contender several levels above anyone he's fought so far... it won't be a easy fight.

Charles had success in grappling by dropping Gaethje then following him to the ground... Khabib had to absorb numerous shots before landing the takedown.

Gaethje is older but the sample size of those who have had success with such a gameplan is small.
Or you know, some people actually analyze the skillsets demonstrated in fights.

I just have...?

To a greater degree, than "huh duh Paddy will smash him" like you seem to be limited to.

If you take this thread at face value, the conclusion is that Paddy has transformed into Holloway in regards to striking and Khabib on the grappling front.

Not on the basis of any evidence, but pure hyperbole.

So what have you seen in Paddy's striking and wrestling that makes you think he's such a lock here? Break it down. Because I've seen all his fights and here's what I see:

His striking is average at best for a top 10-type fighter. Probably below average for guys at that level. He's improved his kicking game a lot, that much I'll grant. He doesn't feint well, and isn't good at angling off when he throws. He's there to be hit more often than not. He's EXTREMELY heavy on his lead leg, leaving him exposed vs a good leg kicker.

His wrestling is...okay. not terrible, but far from really good. He doesn't have an explosive shot, he's mediocre at trying to chain attempts. He's shown (albeit vs suspect competition) to be solid at using his shot to snake to the back like Maia used to do.

He's very good once on the mat. Understands positioning well vs when to attack. Extremely opportunistic when he does go for the sub. Seems to be physically strong for the division.

Add all that up vs a proven guy like Justin and I cannot see how anyone could "analyze the skillsets" and believe this is some sort of squash match for Paddy. Can he win? Absolutely. Could he look impressive doing so? Sure. But thinking it's some sort of foregone conclusion? LMAO...no.

Make a bet

I wasn't making a prediction. I was just pointing out the tiresome sherdoggery which is so common. "He'll never beat him!"

*guy beats him*

"Well, [insert list of excuses/rationalizations for why it happened and he's still a bum]"

On the feet? Yeah Justin destroys him. If Paddy can get the fight to the ground, then he has a chance.

You seen to have some misguided idea that Paddy has to be exactly good as the people who beat Gaethje before to beat him. That's not how MMA works.

i agree that paddy's last three w's were against guys well past their prime, but gaethje is no spring chicken. 37 years old for a LW is ancient. fair to also say justin is past his prime.

old lion v young lion, tale as old as time

I have a idea that those who seem to think Paddy will merk him actually have to offer some tangible analysis why that is the case.

My position isn't misguided as I've repeated numerous times given I'm simply not buying into manufactured hype.

Hell no. I got Paddy. Like this is probably one of the easier fights to pick. Paddy fight IQ is pretty high, he will move and use his size and reach. I wonder what the odds are but this one of those ones where its very easy to picture how the fight plays out.

Gaethje has one speed and one way of fighting. Hes very easy to game plan against. He doesnt wrestle, he isnt really a pressure fighter. He doesnt move around.. He stands his ground and trades. What makes him good is that hes got speed and not afraid to trade strikes but Paddy wont trade with him. Easy fight for Paddy

At age 28, with a decade and 23 fights of professional experience, Paddy Pimblett was decidedly mid-tier at best for a UFC LW. Since then he hasn't changed camps, hasn't changed coaches, hasn't suddenly developed a great out-of-camp diet and work ethic, hasn't displayed new skills, and hasn't generally done anything that would allow a fighter with that kind of experience who's already hit his athletic peak to make a sudden leap forward in ability. He's fought three corpses and looked good doing so, but that doesn't change the fact that essentially no fighter has or will ever made a big leap forward in ability under the circumstances of the last couple of years of Paddy's career absent significant chemical enhancement, and even there, Paddy's out-of-camp regimen would limit the effectiveness of PEDs.

Maybe Gaethje's at the end of his road and Paddy takes this fight, but that would be almost entirely about Gaethje getting old. Paddy is still the Paddy who lost four out of five rounds to Jordan Leavitt and Jared Gordon, sneaking in a nice second round finish against Leavitt. Pretending otherwise is fantasy.

Gaethje was considering retirement. Fighters usually lose a step at that point.

He could do some steroids and he’s pretty big for lightweight

Gaethje isnt exactly in his prime...if Pimblett is smart and takes it down quick, then he could get it done, standing, he kisses the canvas.

Wow I just wrote several paragraphs analyzing this matchup to come to the conclusion that I’d rather see Pimblett fight for the title because Justin’s last IC title win against Tony led to him throwing the belt on the ground-even though Khabib won that belt against #13 Iaquinta at least he beat Conor who at the time was the Linear Champion who had never lost the belt in Comp-we can consider the Conor/Khabib fight Conor’s first attempt to defend the 155 title lol
But yeah the page refreshed mid paragraph and I’m not rewriting all of that again
