They are rattan sticks technically. No padding except on the tip to make sure it won't go through the visors. Illegal targets are the hands, elbows, and anything below the knees (which sucks. I hate that rule).
You can bash with a shield but you can't stab with a shield. A solid hit to a limb disables it.
The general rule is the "Ouch!" rule. If you get hit hard enough in an armored bodypart that would normally make you go "ouch", its considered a hit. You don't have to go down unless they hit with enough force for you feel it through your armor, which would be considered a killing blow. In mass combats like that one, the casualty rate is so high you normally only have to sit out 5-10 minutes before you "respawn." If you are good, you might be fighting fresh guys for half an hour or more if you don't rotate to the back of the line.
