Did he? Then how come he was the one winning round 3, with an even higher output than in rounds 1 and 2?

Dricus got KO'd by a WW outside of UFC, no way he can become MW-champ.

Whittaker lost a split decision to McGee at WW, no way he can become MW-champ. Also finished by Wonderboy and subbed by some low-level guy.

Strickland got dominated by Usman and finished by dos Santos at WW, no way he can become MW-champ.

Or perhaps fighting at WW and fighting at MW is not exactly the same, and fighters can improve? Hmm.

I'd guess in this case all that matters is ability to defend takedowns and submissions, and who has better get ups

Rob seems to be the harder matchup for Khamzat grappling wise.

Dricus is the MW champion and has defended his belt twice.
Him vs Chimaev is a must watch and I wont be surprised to see Dricus win, he is a proven commodity.
Chimaev's cardio is a mystery though, he has slowed down but has finished strong in both 3rd rounds he has been in

That fight was high paced af, more action in one/two rounds than all 5 rounds of DDP and Strickland. And generally cardio is a bit better at Welterweight, more action too.
