does Umar lack heart or was it lack of experience?

The whole dagistanni style works on three parts..

1) cut alot of weight
2) heavy proficiency in grappling arts as majority of fights end up there or can be brought there
3) Be the hammer never the nail
.

You disturb any of these three and they become unglued...sometimes even ending up in the hospital..

They are not unbeatable Khabib included...they just make sure the majority of the odds or circumstances of the fight falls on their side.

This time The Georgian was better in all areas mentioned above and the weight cut affected Umar's cardio...expect to see him move up to 145lbs .. and start chirping with Topuria after a win or two..

That will be Umar's Khabib vs Conor

I don't think it was that complicated, he was winning until he gassed out. It wasn't like he gave up and accepted getting taken down or something.

I thought the last three rounds were pretty clear for Merab
Nah, round 4 was, 3 and 5 weren't. Round 3 Umar landed more, landed cleaner, both went 1/5 on TDs, and Umar had more control time, but it was the first time Merab got him down at all, even though he got right back up, so it seemed better compared to the first 2 where he got rocked and got his back taken. Rnd 5 Umar looked visibly exhausted, but was actually still stuffing like 10 TDs and clearly outstriking him and winning the round with like 40 seconds left, but Merab stole the round by landing a decent punch and getting a TD right at the end.

When they announced 2 48-47 and a 49-46, I actually thought they gave it to Umar, because there’s a much better argument for him winning 3 or 5 than there is for giving Merab 1 or 2.

Not having a good poker face hurt Umar more than Merab did, because all the comments after the first half were about how tired he looked, and not about anything Merab was doing. In 25 minutes with 30 TD attempts, he still only had 2 minutes of control time, and basically none of it was in any of the first 3 rounds.

Can' pace himself. surprising for a 135 pound fighter.

Dagis aren't supermen.

Weird to me that people could follow this sport closely enough to bother with being on a forum and not grasp the concept of cardio and pacing... it is such a fundamental aspect of combat sports.

Saying Umar needs better cardio is not a good outlook to have.

You can not just become like Merab in terms of stamina just by running more, Umar's stamina is not bad as it is.

If you want to go the distance with Merab, you need to disrupt his pace.. make him respect a strength of his that pokes a hole in his game.

Sometimes someone has a natural gift, that you can not just try to match with brute force.

Facts are, Umar's striking, grappling and cardio offered nothing to disrupt Merab from being Merab.

I mean it was a 3-2 fight. It was very competitive. Merab just had more in the gas tank. That last round was super close until Merab turned it up at the very end. I wanted Merab to win but he fought pretty stupid and the showboating and coasting could have cost him the fight.

Yeah.
Umar could sting Merab with his jab repeatedly.
But he could never dissuade him, never change the tone of the fight.
I think Umar needs to add something after that jab of his, something powerful that grabs the opponents attention.
Not to mention his kicks or counter-takedowns which barely worked at all.

“They become unglued” homie what fight did you watch? It literally came down to the last minute of the last round lol. 2-3 more clean strikes in rd 5 and Umar is the champ.

Nah, Umar hasn't fought anyone like Merab but make no mistakes Umar is a champion in waiting. He is the better all round fighter and can do everything. Merab overwhelms his opponents - Umar can train to adjust for that.

Wait until Umar gets to that level.of Cardio -he will be almost unbeatable.

The writing was on the wall after the third... Umar was gassing ...and he didnt have enough left to land the shots he needed to , to win .. .

U can see it in his face...and the unglued part wasnt just to him its the whole crew..

Never forget tiramisu

His striking and grappling were enough to win the first two rounds. Once his cardio started to suffer, it brought the other two aspects down.

Umar's corner, incl. Khabib, made the blunder. They figured that Umar could just fight his game and win, without acknowledging and adapting to the opponent's strength. Urging Umar to wrestle Merab was the blunder. He should have fought like a striker: controlling the pace of the fight by keeping distance and using defensive wrestling only. Umar's got excellent cardio and all the skill to pull this off. This fight was close and could have gone in his favor if he had used better tactics.
