I've been watching "both sides" bicker* about him for years. Here's my conclusion:

1. no one (or so few that we can colloquially say "no one") hates him.
2. but there is a classic "I don't hate him but I hate his fans" situation going on
3. his fans feel this angst and get defensive
4. from that defensiveness, they righteously claim that everyone hates him, and that gets them even more entrenched.
5. which further entrenches the non-haters, who now defensively hate his fans even more.
6. and eventually politics or religion (similar to Godwin's Law) gets invoked and everyone loses their fucking shit.

'Squabble' sounds like an argument between a bunch of turkeys.
Turkeys are generally loud, aggressive, and dumb.

I'd argue that it's the perfect word for the particular scenario.

Great fighter, seems like a good dude.
Khabib had an edge to him that rubbed some people the wrong way, Islam seems a lot more laid back.

He honestly might be better then Khabib. Islam's striking looks a lot more refined.

I was just writing this same exact post, but you beat me to it. It's odd because I actually liked khabib when he was a fighter, but now I lump him in with all those other annoying guys you mentioned. I'm just not a fan of how they hype/build fights.

Honestly, I like him, his fans can be annoying but I'm not on sherdog 24/7 so I don't see them too often.
He's actually kinda funny and has the well rounded skills befitting a champ

Currently I like him, I love watching him fight, but I’m kinda indifferent overall.

If he is active and does the things he said he would do like go up to 170 I will love him.

If he defends once a year the next 2 or 3 years and leaves when there is a lot more to do, and then talks a bunch of shit and presents himself as above everyone else like Khabib it’ll be a love/hate thing the same way it is with Khabib… I still ultimately love him and what he represents, but there are a lot of bad qualities that annoy me. The fan base is pretty representative of how Khabib is lol.

Maybe Islam can take it in another direction. I don’t think he has the dark side Khabib has… but so far he has revealed very little of his true personality.
