Media Demetrious Johnson/Rockhold: Tom Aspinall Should Be "STRIPPED" Of Title When Jon Jones Fights Stipe

This has been my fear for many months now. Aspinall theoretically cannot be interim champ with a title defense if jones defends the real title against someone else.

We’ll see how ufc handles it tho since it’s unprecedented
It's not unprecedented.

They did the same thing to make Brock vs Randy.

Nog beat Sylvia UFC 81 to become IC during Randy contract dispute

Randy was booked against Brock while IC was contested AGAIN

Brock beat Randy UFC 91 to become disputed champ, while there was a separate IC

Mir beat Big Nog UFc 92 To become new IC

Then they finally unified at UFC 100

From UFC 81 until ufc 100 there were 2 HW champs and both titles were contested separately during that span.

MM is getting this from Chael, who basically said that the interim belt goes away once the real champion is active again. In other words, the interim title only exists while the real title is unavailable to be defended.

It makes a level of sense on the surface, but it misses the larger point: once the real champion is ready to fight, the title is no longer "undisputed" and needs to be unified. If one of the champions refuses the fight, he should be stripped and the other fighter elevated to "undisputed."

Exactly.

Tom has the real title.

Jon is a duck, and a cheat, and a wife beating piece of shit. When he refused to unify to instead fight a 42 year old retiree who hasn't won in 4 years any legitimacy to his title vanished like a fart in a tornado.

Wow, very surprising to see such an L take from Demetrious. The undisputed champion is supposed to fight the interim champion ASAP in order to unify the belts. If anything, it should be the other way around where if Tom is active and taking fights, he should be promoted to undisputed since the champion isn't actively competing. The whole point of the interim title is to guarantee a title shot.

Happens around the 57 Minute Mark

They agree with Chael Sonnen's original take and emphasize Tom should be stripped of interm title even if Jones doesnt wanna fight him because the real champion is active again

Yes, that's what the interim belt is. The champ is unable to fight, so we'll keep the weight class moving along, and if the champ is unable to come back, the interim champ becomes the full-on champ.

If the real champ fights, the interim belt no longer exists.

The interim championship isn't a co-championship. There is no fight to determine who the "real" champ is. The real champ is the real champ.

That's not how it's supposed to work. You're no longer undisputed champion when there's an interim title holder disputing your championship claim. It's on the champion to unify or be stripped himself. But we all know those rules aren't going to apply
Wrong. Otherwise it wouldn't be an "interim" belt.

Wrong. Otherwise it wouldn't be an "interim" belt.
Pulled from the wiki article dedicated to boxing and mma interim titles

"Once the original champion can return, at the discretion of the sanctioning body or promotion concerned, they must defend their title against the interim champion - who will relinquish their interim title to fight for the full world title. If the original champion cannot return, refuses to defend their title, or transfers to a different weight division, the interim champion is promoted to full championship status."

So yeah kind of sounds like it's defend to unify the belts, or be stripped.

This entire situation is a gong show , if they weren’t going to make the “champion” fight the “interim champion” then they never should have handed out a belt in the first place , just call it a number one contenders unless we think another fight is more profitable and then we’re going to give you the old fuckaroo match

Too many people just assuming Tom and Jon are going to win their fights. Blaydes vs Stipe next May. <Moves>
Nope never happens IF stipe magically wins Jones and the UFC will do an "instant" (1-2years later) rematch.
And Blaydes will also defend his belt.

Jones should be fighting Aspinall. Why do they each have scheduled fights against different opponents?

Of course you do. Look up what the word "interim" means.

Sometimes common sense can take you far in life. If the UFC is creating an Interim belt with the intent to have Jon fight Stipe first, it doesn't really change anything. If we are talking about tradition here, traditionally an unification bout should happen between the winner of Stipe/Jon vs Tom

Jones isn't active, he's still injured. What should happen is Jones should be stripped when Aspinall defends the interim title. Since Aspinall is defending the title first it's no longer really an interim.

Title has to be unified. So really, Alaina is on Jon jones time whether we like it or not

An interim belt = 1/2 of the title. There is no real title fake title bullshit. The two title holders fight to unify, and if one of them doesn't try to unify, they get stripped GSP style.

Solid chance they give Jon a rematch but who knows, he might retire. Still though, too much putting the cart before the horse going on in here. There's 2 fights that need to play out before we know what's going to happen.

Have anyone of you so called expert read the rules? Or are you all just speculating because you hate Jon?

And sorry Tom is on a 2 fight win streak and 1 fight away from being irrelevant.
He could be great but its too soon.
