Social Cubans are disappearing as they sail to America, leaving a painful void

why are we the world’s life raft again?

respect for cubans who oppose communism, but we have our own people to save.
Because it is waning but US pop culture penetrates the rest of the world and there is some vague notion that Americans are more free than others and optimistic.

The US could do both. Is there a reason it could not?

if anyone thought about it for more than two seconds, they’d realize “freedom” means different things to different people. if you cram all these people under the same roof, you’ll need to take away all their freedoms just to keep them from killing each other.

america can never be the right country for all these people because it was created by americans, for americans. and the only way they’ll live in a country that is truly “free” is if they fight to make their own countries to their liking.

Not all of them, that would be logistically impossible even in the fever dreams of the most fanatical Democrat.

History is filled with people changing cultures, switching ethnic loyalties and religions.

In all scenarios only some of those people become Americans.

You would be against taking North Korean refugees?

those changes, if they happened at all, always came about slowly and organically. i doubt there is any immigrant on earth who would wish this on their own countries, even those who never intend to return.

What do you mean if they happened? How many Pechenegs are out there? Manchus? There are like 3000 Vedas on Sri Lanka. How many Cumans? Vandals?
What does wish this mean? Their country being a success and having many ethnicities in like the US?

Indian immigrants already come from a country like that. It is not Switzerland but it is a success compared to many countries in its area.

i mean exactly what i said—“if.” there are countries that maintained a relatively stable cultural and ethnic balance.

india. there ya go. i doubt anyone in india says “let’s import a bunch of hatians, and they’ll learn to be indian like us.” that would mean the end of india.

They maintained the balance and changed via mass migration and kept going.

Becoming an Indian is harder compared to becoming Swiss, French or American. Also it was in the previous decades.

india is still india, despite whatever immigration took place. who immigrates to india btw? sri lankans? bangaldeshis? cubans? i’m sure they are careful not to accept people that are from incongruent cultures. and i am not surprised thats it’s hard to become indian. good for them. i want it to be difficult to become american too.

I don't think India can be picky. Considering their population size i am not sure they even even care.

Good for them? Just because they are not irrelevant globally why is it good for them?

How difficult?

Cuba has a fascinating history and really came pretty close to being a part of the U.S. There was a pretty sizeable movement in support of it once, pre-revolution. Horrible how things ended up.

Yoel Romero had some pretty distressing stories about what people who leave have to go through, when he was on Rogan's podcast - an episode of Joe's show that is actually worth listening to.

Alexis Vila's life story is pretty sad too. Another Cuban wrestling champ who escaped. You may remember him from Bellator when he KO'd Joe Warren.

He's in prison now for taking part in kidnapping, torturing and killing someone.

Wow i didnt know that.

I remember him from the old Tales From The Grind episodes

i’ll bet they do care. and i’m sure the indian diaspora worldwide would not want other nations’ diasporas settling in india because it would bring about the end of their home country.

you’re the one who brought up india, and how it’s hard to immigrate there. i said “good for them.” its good for them because india will remain india.

How difficult?
well, given the last few decades and the way it’s upset the cultural balance, i’d say we need to dial up the difficulty to “impossible” for a while.

Yeah, they are gonna outbreed a billion people.

No, i said it is hard to become Indian. Whatever India remains India means. it could really benefit from turning into more like Switzerland.

Why the quotation marks?

lol, well when you’re right, you’re right. but rather than import a bunch of swiss people (there aren’t many), maybe they could just study what the swiss are doing and try to replicate it in india.

when i said “good for them,” i was directly quoting myself.

when i said “impossible,” i was referring to a level of difficulty.

Fucking Christ dude, you realize that the 2nd world used to be a thing, and that the Cold War happened? Cuba was not a success when they had an entire trading block of their own, and when Russia subsidized them.

Moreover, Cuba has no food or medicine sanctions, and yet they face shortages of both. Is that America’s fault? Why doesn’t this argument of sanctions work on Cubans? Is it because they are aware of how their system works, and don’t view sanctions as the primary problem in their system?
You need money to pay for food and medicine of course and US sanctions have damaged the Cuban economy for decades just as their damaging Venezuela now leading to tens of thousands of excess deaths.

Yeah when Masvidal had the 2nd fight against Usman he walked out wearing a shirt that said freeAlexisVila or something like that.

Yoel also mentioned in interviews he was friends with Alexis too. Probably Lombard as well. I think all 4 of them are friendly.

Alexis was already 40 when he fought Warren, and fighting at 135. iirc he started his MMA career 11-0 and then started getting some losses. If he got in younger probably could have been really great. He also knocked out Ben Nguyen early in his career too.

People have forgotten Joe Warren thanks to Vila. What a satisfying moment that was.

No one can have enough stuff in them...

India is probably one of the hardest countries to govern..

Why do you wanna go to that level?
