Cory Sandhagen is extremely overrated

His cardio impressed me. He didn’t accept bottom position until the final round after getting up something like 20-30 times.

I have to agree with TS. Corey got a lot of cache for KO’ing the ghost of Frankie and “I’m about-to-implode” Moraes. Solid BW, but will never fight for a title again, let alone be a champion.

Whilst it didn't ultimately affect the outcome, he does deserve credit for this

No one could keep working with Merab, not even Umar. Corey did, even if it was mostly defensive, like getting up off the ground with him

Possibly the only one with a gas tank close to Merab

I think he said pre fight he never got tired in a bout and this fight kind of backs that up. Had to keep fighting at the pace of the opponent, which is tougher, especially when it's a freak like Merab. But did so

But yeh, like I say, nowhere near winning the fight unfortunately

I watched the fight without audio, but it seemed like he put up a better fight against merab then O'Malley or Umar.

I don't think Merab will lose until someone figures out a game plan to overcome the scoring bias of spamming takedown. Or simply get ktfo.

What I mean is, Merab gets those take downs but half the time he does nothing with the take down and the other half of the time it's weak pitter patter shots. So merabs opponents can land the more damaging shots, but then get taken down 2-3 times during a round and lose the round.

He was more competitive against Merab than everyone in recent memory other than Umar

Sod off

Merab's a freak so he cant be used to discredit fighters from being elite. He's a one in a million type

DDP isn't a fraud and a bum because Khamzat is a freak

You're posting as a superfan not with facts. How can 49-45 where a guy was taken down a ton and nearly stopped in round 2 be classed as competitive. He was destroyed. Cory fans are delusional.

Cejudo, Aldo and hell even Omalley 1 was just as if not more competitive. They didn't nearly get finished or 10-8'd and won rounds too.

Stop listening to Joe and DC going nuts for glancing shots also.

Bullshido.

He may not be able to beat Merab spamming TD's but he is top 5 IN THE WORLD. Part of that was down to tactics as well IMO, but none the less he was able to tag Merab and hurt him. In addition to that, he actually fights in a fan friendly style, so... points for that. World class cardio.... no doubt about it, a lesser fighter would have been drowning after the 2nd round.

You clowns are ridiculous sometimes.

With both Umar and Merab I think it's just a matter of game planning right and setting up a shot that will allow him to go in for the kill when the opportunities are there, or when he makes them. I do think this would all be applied easier against Merab then Umar, but Cory's 32, he has a couple of years left to make something happen IMO.

cory never "goes for the kill" so that gameplanning shit doesn't really come into play
he fights cowardly and is happy to have staring contest defeats against top fighters
his fight against umar was ridiculous

A legitimate top five guy in the UFC who's got a lot of good wins is overrated? If you think Sandhagen isn't a very good, on the cusp of being an elite fighter if not already one, you're probably a bigger can than you think he is.

Lol at O'Malley was competitive

Guess that makes you an O'Malley superfan

Agree to disagree.

Nah, he's elite as it gets Merab is just that good/relentless. He totally drowns people.

He cannot beat any of the top guys. He lost to Aljo, he lost to Yan, he lost to Umar

You can argue he win the TJ fight but TJ was coming off a 2 year layoff, dealing with arm injuries, tore his knee in the first round and cory still made it close enough for the judges to give TJ the win

The only guys he beats are guys who have been whooped much worse by the other top contenders.

Vera got completely outclassed against O’Malley and got dropped by Figgy. Cory took him to a boring decision where he never committed to any of his strikes

Font was getting bobbed around by Aldo, Figgy AND vera. Sandhagen couldn’t do anything to him, yes he was injured but that’s no excuse for a win based entirely off control time.

Lost the first two rounds against song and only started to win as song lost more and more blood. Yan throughly outclassed song with a torn groin and meniscus from the very first minute

Plus he in my humble opinion got gifted a decision win against a 5 foot 3 lineker. Argue about the philosophy of when you call a fight a robbery all you want, I didn’t agree with the decision so I’m counting it against him. Rocked and outgrappled by a guy he had 8 inches of height on

Can only knock out an old man like edgar who was on a 3 fight losing streak at 38, and moraes who was on a 2 fight losing streak, and would then lose another 6 fights in a row
Stupid thread of the month. Congratulations.

i always did find him overrated but given the stylistic disadvantage and Merab just being a better fighter, Sandman did an outstanding job and much respect gained for he did last Saturday.

He's certainly in the 4-7 range in the division, but can't seem to clear that hurdle.

He's fantastic, but his style has been nullified or exploited by the upper end. Seems a bit too tentative at times, lacking that pure aggro instinct.

Skilled enough to be in the mix and probably stay mid top 10 for the next 4-5 years.

Yup, perennial top 5 guy. Pretty much the most elite type of "gatekeeper". Credible contender etc.

Definitely not overrated though because no one really thinks Cory is some dominant champion level type of fighter. Most people thought he would lose to Umar, Merab and whatnot.
