If you're suggesting that 30% of the federal prison population are unauthorized immigrants, that is very far from true. It's less than half of that, and most of those are held for being here illegally (as opposed to committing any real crimes). And that's still misleading because there's a bias toward federal prisons for that. In state prisons, it's less than 1 in 20.

As for the OP, I'd like to see the story from a credible source before making a judgment.

When I lived in Cali, my car was hit by an illegal alien. When I approached him for his insurance papers, he COULDN'T speak a lick of English. He murmured something like I be back, and they took off because of no paperwork. I was left to deal the bill(My bad for having ONLY liability). If you can't speak English or go through the process of being thing to be here, you don't deserve the privileges of an actual American. I've worked with some and quite a few of them don't even care to learn the English language. When you go to Mexico, and you don't speak Spanish, do you get special treatment? Absolutely not. In fact it's sometimes the opposite. I hope they show up, throw them in a truck, and send them back.

Would it against the law if you held him at the scene of the wreck until the cops came? I would have called the cops and stood in front of his car door until the cops got there. This is bullshit.

The sad thing is deportations would hardly be necessary if we did one simple thing, quit enabling them. If the government actually did it's job and took the steps necessary to prevent them from getting jobs, finding housing and sending their children to school, the vast majority of them would willfully leave. They come here for jobs and a better life, not to be homeless. They are continuing to come here because the system is literally set up to support them at every level. This story is just another example. Politicians just like to pretend that getting rid of these people is not feasible because they do not want to get rid of them.

I think it's pretty obvious that all parties in government are completely in support of the open border concept. Really it's just a matter of managing the voters.

The reality is that most illegals in federal prisons are enjoying lengthy sentences due to returning after being deported. Federal sentencing guidelines have harsh standards for those caught reentering the U.S. I would disagree with Jack in that the federal system is biased. It's just that federal judges have no leeway when it comes to sentencing in these cases. I've sat in courtrooms and listened to judges essentially plead with the defendants to not come back, explaining that there will be no room for leniency. It will be an automatic and harsh sentence that the court is obliged to pass down.

Additionally, there is also a passing of the buck that goes on with state courts. Not wanting to burden the local economies with imprisoning an illegal, they often pass that person on to the federal system (as they illegal status is a violation of federal law). This again contributes to the notion that the federal courts are more biased than state courts on this issue.

What I meant by "biased" is that the system is set up such that more unauthorized immigrants will be in federal prisons than state prisons for the crime of unauthorized immigration so focusing on incarceration rates in federal prisons only gives a misleading picture of the situation (not to mention that the guy's facts were way, way off as he reported them). So I wasn't saying anything about bias from prosecutors or anything--just in the (again, inaccurate) data given by the other poster.

My thought is we seal the border so we can stop people from coming in. You would think in this day and age of scare tactics post 9/11 that would be important. I mean if i was a terrorist and wanted to get into the country to do harm its pretty easy if thousands of homeless mexicans can achieve getting in daily so im sure terrorist can do the same.
