Russia is a zero-sum mafia state; they exist essentially as a ponzi scheme bent on weakening literally everyone. The West, with its fancy functional democracy and economies, is the principle barrier to their territorial and/or economic expansion which, unlike the contemporary western model, comes _100%_ exclusively at the expense of economic and political autonomy being subsumed by mobster cronyism.
In the very long run, China is certainly the bigger threat, but thats because they are also vastly more administratively competent and practical, and understand the need on a global stage to focus belligerence inward rather than outward

But, and this is important, we are a functional democracy that has actual good faith alliances based on mutual interest. Russia is not, and does not.
