Would Teddy Riner Ronda the entire HW division?

Her style and it's application to MMA is one of the biggest myths going around today. It's been pieced together to try and inflate her Judo credentials [Because Bronze doesn't have quite the same pop].

The reality is that any grappler needs to close the distance. In WMMA the opponents have very poor ring iq, very little footwork, no real jab, no utilisation of teeps, no direction changes etc etc. In other words women can't control distance.

As a Judoka [Especially one without elite skills elsewhere] you MUST close the distance to have any chance. The reason elite males such as Ishii we're effective have nothing to do with Newaza

No son, he wouldn't. Could he end up being a good MMA fighter? Possibly.

Would watch.

He beats bigfoot, soa, schuab, mitrione, nelson and rothwell.

Maia gets the clinch all the time with a very straight foward style, than he gets the takedown. But those things would mean very little if he didnt had the amazing ground game he has.

A big portion of Maia's takedowns come from wrestling. Technically he has one of the better shots at WW. His level changes are elite. Even still it isn't a push over on the ground. Watch his UFC fight against relative nobody Ryan Jensen. Even as a low ranked challenger Jensen displayed a relatively high level bottom game. He reverses a few positions and held a solid guard until eventually being submitted.

Maia's judo comes into play more often when his opposition are aggressive [Either striking or with their wrestling].

with 6-12 months training he could do a decent Brock dance

Not in 6-12 months, but if took mma seriously he could do really well in a few years.

And I am not sure about that 96" reach??? ts may have made a error there

Ogawa, Yoshida, Nastula and Ishii didn't.

All way superior judokas to Ronda and they all fought at HW.

Ishii is strong as f*ck too:

Exactly. Ronda doesn't dominate cuz shes an amazing Judo athlete, it's because WBW sucks and all the fighters are basically part timers.

There are 30 women ranked at WBW. There are 600 at LW. This is one of the most mind boggling stats to highlight the difference in talent: Tyson Griffin is ranked at #178 at LW.

Anyway, this is just another proof that weight limit in heavyweight division is bullshit. Riner wouldn't join but maybe someone of his weight and legit fighting background would. With a limit you can't claim that the champ is trully the baddest man on the planet.

Please, tell me more about all these elite athletes who could potentially be MMA champions, for whom it would be unrealistic/unfair to make 265lbs/120kg for a weigh in.

Ronda is a champ in the weakest division in UFC history. Guys in the HW division can actually fight. If he cant take em down he will be turned into a punching bag. HWs do have punching power.

Possibly, but he'd more probably get lit up and made to look like an average fighter in the cage.

Bullshit. Takes more than 1 art form to dominate in today's MMA landscape. The top guys would make him pay if he relied on Judo and a good chin.

Lol let's not pretend like a 26 year old 7 time world champion can't learn how to throw punches at a base level.

Judo = throwing and submitting. Add chin and he's fine. If he can throw punches it's a bonus.

You guys are overrating the competition. This dude is 6 ft 8 and carved out of stone. He'd make light work of everyone unless he can't get hit.

For fucks sake a pro wrestler was the heavyweight champ not so long ago. You're all clouded. Heavyweight MMA is garbage.

the French Judo association is strongly opposed to MMA and I believe he is a strong supporter of that stance

Trust me, he's always been interested in MMA (as opposed to what he said, or what he was told to say).

With training he could be competitive for sure, but no man is doing to "Ronda" a division. There have been plenty of male judo aces that have brought some uniques skills, but haven't dominated.

The reason Ronda can do what she does is her division has women in it. She can walk through most females punches without fear of being hurt because they "hit like girls."

This guy isn't going to walk-through a JDS or Overeem punch to get the clinch.

Fixed the reach.

I'm pretty sure Riner himself is interested in MMA, it's just the judo federation making him say those things.. Pretty sad.
Nice discussion btw guys.

This is sherdog where apparently nfl guys would dominate hw mma if they tried but a judo athlete cant do well
.....go figure

no way he'd pass drug testing

Yeah because as a: - 2012 HW Olympic Judo Gold Medalist
- 7X World Judo Champion
- 4 Gold medals at the European Championships

He never had to pass a drug test before.

As always it depends on how good his chin is, and how quickly he'd pick up striking. He'd sure as fuck stand a better chance of doing so than any random NBA or NFL player at least, having the stellar grappling background he does.

It's not like men's MMA hasn't already seen several elite judokas. Don't know who that guy is but simply being the world's best judo practitioner doesn't mean you would beat an MMA fighter. Ronda is exceptional but when you compare her competition with the competition that Yoshida fought it's a laughable comparison.
