Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

I think Loopy moving to Lobo Gym is already paying off. Her striking looked crisp and her fundamentals were sound. I think that was a bigger beatdown than the Carnelossi fight

srsly the beating loopy put on elise - you'd think loopy caught elise in bed with her husband (or something along those lines) <45>

Some random thoughts:

  • If UFC wants to lure Nunes back, Val vs Pena for WBW belt will be the best shot. Nunes would hate to see either of them holding belt. LOL
  • What would happen if Val fought Ronda years ago? Though Val is a much better grappler then Holm, would she resist the urge to do a arm & head throw?
  • It seems to me that Rose is out of options now. She doesn't have the size to fight elite WFLW fighters, and she can no longer duck grapplers at WSW. I think Zhang has the skill to wrestle-fuck Rose now.
2012/2013 Ronda is probably capable of tapping 2013 Valentina. (In 2013 I thought Coenen & Cyborg were the biggest threats to Ronda) By the time Val made her UFC debut (2015), she could’ve likely beaten Ronda as the latter had already begun to neglect her grappling, & Val would’ve likely known to avoid the clinch. Valentina played matador with Holm who did it to Rousey. However, Rousey didn’t ever face a good Thai clinch, I often wonder if Nakamoto, Schevchenko, or GDR could’ve messed her up in one.

Been thinking about this idea, but this post seems to confirm it. The biggest difference between Grasso’s recent success and Aldana’s lack of it is reaction to outside pressure. Aldana completely folded mentally against Nunes. Grasso practically started in 3rd gear against Shevchenko while Aldana couldn’t even get out of neutral. If Aldana wants to have any success in the future, I think she needs to see a sports psychologist

Good theory. I never have subscribed to the "Aldana was afraid of Nunes" narrative, she just seems to never perform near at the top of her game when the stakes get high and the pressure cooking. Never gave it much more thought, but this sounds plausibe enough for a bjpennod.gif

Never seen anyone fighting in the UFC with that name

(Van Buren is way cooler and more presidential sounding anywaY)

I don't think Irene has PTSD from any one fight or anything I think she's just innately kind of shy. I the first time I saw her was her Invicta debut and she looked kind of nervy at the weigh ins... One of the commenters on the youtube vid timestamping all the bits to perv at flagged her as 'very shy cute girl' so it was obviously rather noticable. Similarly more recently someone in another chat described her as the 'big shy girl in a group of friends' so that's another person with that impression. She's kind of artsy (I think she studied photography) and wearing rock band t's all the time so if this was 'class of UFC high' I'd cast her as the slightly awkward but friendly goth chick...
...I read an interview where she she was nervous about fighting a 'famous fighter' like Bethe... then I understood that yes, she's just a nervous sort and that wasn't gonna bode well for a big title fight.

I always was confused about Vanilla Ice picking a stage name. The dude is Robert Van Winkle, which is a darn cool name, worthy enough to be used as a rapper. Vanilla was "he he", sure, but ROBERT VAN WINKLE!

Winkle? I don't know. That sounds rather, well, rude. And we can't be having that can we?

(especially not when we're down with da kidz)

Never could stand that asshole.
