With 3 Ls in a row, is sherdog ready to accept Yan as overrated?

No, he's still the best striker in the division, never been finished and never even lost a UD until tonight.

BW is the deepest it's ever been and his style when he doesnt finish sets him up to possibly lose a controversial close decision if he doesnt dominate the entire fight. I think the matchup the UFC made with Merab was kinda questionable in the first place. You really shouldn't be fighting a top 3 opponent after going 1 out 4 in your last 4 (or even going 2 out of 4 with an O'Malley win) and the matchup with Merab was odd considering the possible outcome if Yan didn't finish or dominate him.

Im assuming because Yan was a former champion his payout is '"significant" and more than the UFC wants to pay, also him being Russian (at this moment in time socio-politically) and seemingly disgruntled with the company makes me think he probably parts ways with the UFC, who which for financial reasons im sure wouldn't mind. Hes a top 5 BW in the world nonetheless but he might be figured out strategically these days.

"Old man" Aldo beat Chito, Font and Pedro after LOSING to Yan. All 3 are top 10 and Chito in a title eliminator and top 5. Merab barely beat Aldo himself all he did was hug him. Beating Aldo and finishing him is a STELLAR win.

California Dad Faber brutally finished Simon in less than a minute to get the Yan fight and Ricky is top 10, finished Merab and is surging now.

Jimmie was 30 when Yan beat him.... And you conveniently ignored Yan beating Cory whos top 5 and in a title eliminator with Chito. Sean "loss" is a widely considered robbery by 90% of fans, media and fighters.

Yan might be overrated but the OP is as braindead 30 IQ as it gets for the rationale.

He did beat Sandhagen though.

But yeah overrated he is. I don't like to use that word but it applies to him.

Dude got a title shot by beating old man Faber and old man Rivera, got his belt by beating old man Aldo, he is good but he is not even close to the best BW in the UFC like the promotion and the fans were selling him, he didn't face anyone elite on their prime during his rise.
I don't want to admit it.
I was SO high on this guy.
What he did to Faber, Aldo, and Sterling (before the foul) was a sight.

Maybe 135 is so darned stacked that Yan, Chito, and Sandhagan would all be the champ in another era or org.

After getting outstruck by Sean and outgrappled by Sterling and Merab it's safe to say he isn't actually the best at either area like what used to be the opinion around here.

Still strong in all those areas sure, but beatable.
He should of won those 2 fights also yan did more with effective wrestling than sterling did

I think I overrated him yeah. He seems washed. Lacking in confidence too.

Yan is a slow starter that is excellent when givin time and space but can be stagnant when pressured. He does seem to be slowing down a bit though, definitely appeared to have less pop on his strikes

He needs to throw uppercuts and knees and tighten up his punching, was throwing heaps of wide hooks in the fight he should risk it more especially since Merab can't control him on the ground so there isn't as much risk unlike against Aljo who would scramble for the back. Was same as Aljo fight, both shot dozens of takedowns because Yan doesn't punish them or give them thought to maybe set them up better.

As far as title shots go, Yan seems to be done. Remains to be seen whether he’s done-done or just Gane-done.

I don't think anyone could have done too much against that furry head willy last night unfortunately. He was on him like flies on dogshit.

Lol “overrated”. Hell no.

All it shows is how STACKED 135 is. For a guy of Yan’s level to exit the top 5 is pure insanity, bantamweight is by far the best division in the UFC.
Merab is one hell of an athlete, and he came up with a great gameplan against Yan.

O’Malley’s excellent and has a tough physique to deal with at 135, and the decision was controversial too.

and Aljo in the Yan rematch found the one weak spot in Yan’s game, which is that he exposed his back when scrambling back up to his feet.

Petr Yan is a top level bantamweight in a division filled with absolute freaks.

no way. IMO those losses almost don't even count, in a way. before last night he had a DQ loss, a split decision against the champ and another split decision he absolutely won. as far as i'm concerned, last night was the first night on the loss counter. he loses his next fight and you resume this conversation.

Nope, just hit a rough patch in his career. Sure he might not ever truly recover from it, but it dosen't mean his peak was overrated to me. Not every fighter is destined to stay on top for long periods of time for one reason or another. The mental game can weigh heavy on even the best. And clearly Petr is going through struggles with his mental game. He still has great strikes, and incredible balance/take down defense. That hasn't changed. He just needs to find ways to make adjustments to not get overwhelmed by the heavy pressure grappling styles that stifle his offense.

He should have went to a sports psychologist years ago. When your gimmick is "needing a few rounds to warm up and then hoping for a finish", you cannot hope to have consistent success at the top of the division. Very skilled fighter obviously but gets in his own way/relies on excuses instead of coming back hungrier (going the Gustaffson/Rockhold route).
Needing a round for timing isn't uncommon for a counter striker. Dude got robbed twice in a row.

Dude got a title shot by beating old man Faber and old man Rivera, got his belt by beating old man Aldo, he is good but he is not even close to the best BW in the UFC like the promotion and the fans were selling him, he didn't face anyone elite on their prime during his rise.
I think he is the second best in division after merab. Unar might prove better too
