Why only $15 an hour?

Gotta love this country. You have a whole group of people who say unskilled minimum wage jobs aren't a career and if they want a living wage they should be replaced by robots. But then the same people freak out when unskilled manufacturing jobs are converted to robots.

Make perfect sense.

But now all his cost have gone up so any increase in sales is wiped out due to increased cost of goods. if everybody is making more, then everybody raises prices. its not like shit stays the same price.

So what happens when we place tariffs on imported manufactured goods? The price magically won't go up? We'll just start making things here and the steel workers, auto workers, etc of America will be cool with a $7.25 an hour wage in order to keep costs the same?

These minimum wage jobs are not meant to be a career. They're a bridge to a career. Bums.

Why aren't "minimum wage jobs" a career? Because they tend to be unskilled labor? If so then why is steel work, auto manufacturing etc full of unskilled jobs that Americans want brought back from over seas so they can have them as careers? Every male in my town for decades went straight from high school to working in our steel mills (which finally closed down for good two years ago).

Minimum wage laws developed from middle ages wage ceilings law. When so many people died of plague, wages sky rocketed since there was hardly any workers left. Then eventually it became the standard wage at which a peasant could afford enough food to live.

It sure as hell isn't lowers wage a peasant could afford food to live now a days.

I'm not talking about steel mills, that's a skilled job. You have to be intelligent and work your ass off. I'm talking about McDonalds and jobs kids in high school should be working, not grown adults trying to afford a house/car/kids whatever.

I'm not for giving a hamburger flipper, or a waitress $15 an hour for a job a monkey could do for free.

But neither of those statements are true. Steel working and iron working, shaping steel and iron into something is skilled. Simply making it yields many unskilled jobs. I'm the first of the males of my family to nothe go into the steel mill. It's hard work but unskilled work none the less. Anyone with an able body can do many of the jobs there. My uncle has worked in steel 35+ years and he's not the brightest.

You're biased like many people, probably because you work in heavy industry and it's human nature to look down on people who serve us food. But the fact is a guy flipping burgers is probably just as smart as the grunt at the mill or the grunt the down in the mine.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. Flipping burgers is not a career, you could have the smartest person in the world flipping a burger that doesn't mean someone else can't do that same job. It's not about how smart you are, it's how many people could fill your spot and do that job just as good as you did it. Anyone could flip a burger, they don't deserve to make $10 or $20 less an hour than most college grads in fields they took years to study and master. If a burger flipper gets $15 an hour, a computer programmer or nurse will want $75.

I think a $15/hour federal MW is a bad idea. But making subjective judgement calls on who deserves what with regards to wage policy is a terrible idea and makes no sense. The arguments should be about weighing economic costs and benefits.

And the argument for a $15 MW is based on the idea that full time workers should have a minimum standard of living, so you aren't even addressing the core argument for one.

Besides, fast food work is shitty and very hard work. Stop being a dick about it.

And I'm saying that many manufacturing jobs require just as much skill as the burger flipper. So what's the justification for wanting to save those jobs that have $20, $30, $40 hourly wages but demonizing any burger flipper asking for $15?

My personal opinion is that minimum wage in America should be $12 an hour. I've worked minimum wage back when it was $5.50 an hour in IL and I now am a salaried employee for a BIG company in the IT field, and I live in a steel town still. I'm saying there's a big pile of hypocrisy when we are fighting to bring back unskilled manufacturing jobs to America where unions and workers have high wages vs. demonizing other fields of unskilled labor for wanting more pay.

Wages should be higher across the board for all levels of workers IMO. In addition to a higher minimum wage we need executive salary caps. We see executive bonuses and overall profits are at all time highes but wages remain flat.

I'll say what I feel like saying whether you think I'm being a dick or not. Go flip some burgers, bum.

You should move to a socialist nation then.

I did it but after graduating college I moved on to a very success and lucrative career in accounting, but thanks anyway.

And I actually don't care if you're a cunt online, but you are just solidifying yourself as one of the worst posters on here. And if you weren't such a child you would have more productive conversations on here. Whatever, your loss (because you actually don't contribute anything anyway). Just look at your response. You couldn't even address the core of my post.

What do you do for a living?
Based on his hostility towards fast food workers I'd bet he's just above that pay range. He probably thinks he's hot shit because he makes $12/hour at Costco.

Guys who make big money don't care that much (except the extent it effects their businesses).

Exactly, it's a bridge job to a career. It's not meant to sustain a family with. I read your post, you want to call people dicks, then fuck your response, you get none.
