Why only $15 an hour?

When I started working minimum wage was $5.15 and shit was a hell of a lot cheaper.

A bridge to what career?

Everyone can't be lawyers, doctors, engineers, and business owners. in fact not even the majority can.

Our middle class was built on jobs that at one time were very low wage, with zero benefits. Our labor movement changed that by demanding a larger piece of the pie. We need to do that again, or accept that a large American middle class is a thing of the past.

exactly, not everyone can, thats how capitalism works.

The harsh truth is this, a doctor has a very hard job. they deal with life and death of patients, are never off work, have to balance many different things. it takes years of study to become a doctor, and a lawyer, and an engineer.

they get paid more because their proffessions supply the community with a greater service.

if you are flipping burgers at mcdonalds, you arent doing a job as difficult as being a doctor. and you don't deserve 15 dollars an hour or more.

to think someone working as a cashier deserves the same amount of money as someone working in a factory is ridiculous.

Why not give everybody a million and watch the meltdown?

Deserves has nothing to do with economic collapse.

I have zero interest in debating what the proper compensation to a burger flipper should be. I am not a burger flipper, and I make good money.

I have plenty of interest in debating whether our current level of economic inequality is likely to lead to the next great depression.

If you increase wages for minumume wage workers youd have to increase wages for doctors.

Whose going to pay for the increase in minimum wage

FIAT money is not real. We have printed 20 trillion dollars since 2008, the sum of our entire national debt.

I have a question for you now. Has our economy been stagnant since 2008?

If your answer is yes, then my next question is, how do we fix that?

See I offer the solution of implementing policy that will raise wages, to spur demand within the economy. What solution do you offer?

we have to find a way to increase wages enough to allow people to spend money, but not enough that business' are forced to fire people they can't afford to pay and avoid inflating the price of goods

Inflate the price of goods. That is why the FED exists. Inflation always exists, even when wages are stagnant for decades straight. That is actually the problem.

We are in a demand crisis. I would rather fix that through trade and immigration reform, but I don't think that is going to happen. So I also support the second best option, in raising the MW.

and im saying if you raise the MW it would force companies to lay off employees because they simply would not be able to afford paying them

I get that, but if my choices are a path where jobs might be lost, or a path where we might see global economic collapse. I choose the potential of lost jobs.

Even better though. Lets conduct experiments. Lets raise the MW in certain states, and try tax cuts and deregulation in other states, and see what is more successful.

Oh wait, we have done this, and Washington state, and California's economies are far more successful than Kansas, or Florida's.

That's fair enough, and Texas and North Dakota have energy booms going, and competitive economic growth. However, what was predicted by the nay-sayers in every market that raised the MW, has yet to come to pass anywhere.

I want to point out that I never challenged your claim that some people might lose their jobs from raising the MW. The question is will 2 jobs be created due to the destruction of the 1 job?

i think it's totally possible, yes.

one thing i do know is that the current minimum wage isn't enough to live off of. I live in an area with some of the oldest and cheapest real estate in the entire country, and the MW still isn't enough to live on that. something has to be done for sure. Is it 15 dollars? I don't know. but its more than 7.
