Why do Liberals get so offended by "Wuhan virus"?

Stating the geographic source of an illness is helpful from a historical perspective, other than that, @Edison Exotic was spot on.

I don't know anyone who raises chickens that gets offended by an illness being called "Chicken Pox".

How are your farm workers coping with the Crisis? I imagine it would be very bad for the food chain if farmers get sick.

Exactly and people forget that US economy under Trump was at an all-time high before the outbreak. You can understand the dude's irritated by a situation he was trapped into because of a foreign cover-up. Fauci said himself they didn't have all the information they needed in January that's why Trump's initial statements sound ridiculous now....He was only working with what he was told.

He was going to get re-elected easy now it's a 50-50 situation. He's been incredibly nice to China considering all the facts....

<TrumpWrong1>

Trump's opponent will be Biden.

50-50 would happen only if Obama took over for Biden (which won't happen).

In my opinion, right now it's 70-30 in favor of Trump whereas before the Pandemic, it was 90-10.

Still Trump's Election to lose (which he won't). <TheDonald>

They've realized they can have power and control through faux outrage and virtue... People generally don't want to offend others so they take advantage of that...

People are "offended" because Trump said it. You'd have to be pretty dumb to not realize he was talking about the Nation of China and not your neighbors. So either they are functionally retarded or they are pretending to be offended to try and score points against Trump

They may be the former but the latter is more likely.

It's always Political.

ALWAYS.

Hey asshole, my neighbor raises chickens! These eggs have sustained my family throughout the Chinowuhan virus shutdown.

It is hard to like a Maher segment. He's been such a cunt so many times. But his anti PC stances do have value.

Meh. I think he's trying to play both sides and seems like such a two-faced cunt.

We're keeping the food infrastructure moving no matter what.

It's quite easy for a farmer or rancher to be isolated out in the middle of their fields and still be very productive.

As of right now, if anyone even has a hint of illness, they can stay home and their salary will be unaffected.

Thats cool.

As a half-asian I appreciate your honesty but it is what it is: a Chinese virus. Not a Japanese virus or a Cambodgian illness it is well.... a Chinese virus.

It is a Chinese virus because of Chinese culture, Milanese people don't eat bat meat. Spanish towns don't have weird wet markets like in some areas in China. Those European citizens are paying a heavy price because of some Chinese habits that have endangered public health.

It is a Chinese virus because of the CCP's cover-up and their initial inability or unwillingness to keep wildlife trade under control. Had they inspected those wet markets more rigorously and regularly this shitstorm would have been avoided. I think they're going to start doing that from here on out but it's too late.

It is a Chinese virus because well.... it comes from China. I don't hear Spaniards bitch about the Spanish flu and it didn't even come from Spain or South America. Chinese people will have to face what a minority of German-Americans went through after WWII or what some muslims had to deal with after 9/11. It will sting for a few months then it'll go away gradually. It's nothing compared to the jobs that people have lost or the deaths of thousands of loving grandpas.

Actually people from Spain were unfairly stigmatized over Spanish flu despite that it actually originated from China too, hence subsequent UN rules that diseases are not supposed to be named after their supposed place of origin.

Let's hope you're right.

I'd be incredibly happy to be wrong on this one.

I don't see a problem with Wuhan Flu or virus as it denotes geographic place of origin for purpose of tracking.

I wouldn't say it's offensive to say Chinese flu but I view it as low iq to assign an ethnicity or nationality to a virus. I mean no one in America was calling the e.coli outbreak in the US a couple years ago the "farmer virus".
Swine flu and Bird flu both identified farmers as the source. Spanish Flu isn't considered racist.

From what I've heard them say, they see it as an extension of growing animosity towards Chinese people, in general. They are noticing an uptick in racism against Asians, and hearing people calling this the "Chinese Virus" or "Wuhan Virus" likely seems like an extension of that racism to them.

I think people are saying some really messed up things about Asians, and disguising it with, "I'm talking about culture, not people." Many people living here are still connected to that culture, and they have family in those countries. In the last few days I've repeatedly heard Chinese people referred to as unfeeling robots, and I was told that is not an offensive thing to say because it's about culture. No, that's about people. I know a few recent immigrants from China, they are not unfeeling robots and I'm sure they'd be pretty upset if you said that to their face about their friends and family.

In another thread right now, a guy is saying the ethnic Chinese are meek, deceitful, underhanded, and accurately represented by old stereotypical cartoons.

Asian people are hearing all of this, and it's ridiculous for us to not expect them to be fed up with it all at this point.

The CCP is proud buddy keep the good work.

And let's not forget that a disproportionate amount of our Doctors and Nurses that are saving lives right now in America are Asians. Asians are overrepresented in the medical field (they make up over 20% of the field), and they are currently putting the country's needs over their own.

Asian Americans will be the first to tell you the problems with China. The vast majority I'd say would not have a problem saying Chinese culture in large ways is fucked up

I see where you're going with this and let me tell you one thing....If a new virus came from Hanoi I wouldn't mind using the term the Hanoi Virus myself, especially if it was because of Vietnamese authorities' negligence. Same with Tokyo, Seoul, Milan, New York, Paris, Amsterdam or... yeah WUHAN.

Why would people criticize Pompeo for using the term 'Wuhan' virus when journalists used "Chinese virus" at the very beginning of the outbreak (now they've stopped)

Is it true the people in Vietnam are seething with anger at China? My Vietnamese friends tell me the government can barely contain it

Oh my, a country with MORE PEOPLE has more CASES! What a brilliant graph.

Here is a graphic that matters

It's hilarious that to try and make up for how unquestionably godawful this administration has been (the economic upturn from Trump came from deficit spending and nothing else) his supporters continue to cling to anything they can, like "liberals not liking x term"

Pathetic to the extreme.

Vietnamese people have been like that for a long time...If you meet a Vietnamese try asking him about anything to do with Chinese, you will hear an earful...

I don't really care what it's called.

China sucks. They bully their neighbors, they bully their populace, they bully minorities, they're commies, they eat bats, they create huge $$ markets for endangered animals, they rub rhino horns on their balls and dumb shit like that, and they have created a shamefully large overpopulation of people.

And what do they provide the world? Slave labor. The only people over here who will vouch for this Country are 1)those who have rustled jimmes about something because their cousin lives in China and 2) card carrying 1% assholes like Bill Gates who have massively benefitted from slavery. Oh and NBA players.

Yes, China does suck. In many ways they are an authoritarian slave dungeon.

They aren't anywhere near as bad as the United States when it comes to foreign aggression. In that arena, the USA has been the worst country in the world for the past 15 years at least. China also remembers that the United States armed and financed Chiang Kai-Shek, and if you think that is meaningless, imagine if China or some other country had armed and financed the confederates during the US civil war; creating a situation where whole cities were reduced to ruin, allowing for a much longer, more violent and destructive war. That would be mentioned without end in history books and it would create permanent bitterness.

U.S. Latin American embargoes have faced unanimous condemnation across the hemisphere, the invasions, assassinations and drone strikes throughout the Middle East are well documented and have been internationally condemned, and the tension that America has built with Russia puts us all at risk from a nuclear confrontation.

China treats its own citizens worse than America treats hers. But China does not routinely and brazenly violate international law like the United States does.

What about all the farmers pouring out milk and destroying crops?
