"We've been calling viruses where it came from..."- Bill Maher..
I agree with Mr. Maher for once...

I would say it's because negatively associating a country with a pandemic upsets them, even if that country generated that pandemic.

Yeah I still don't get this, especially when Chinese Americans feel offended by the term like wtf you're an American ffs.

Maybe that's it, they take it as an attack on their ethnicity rather than a truthful reference to the virus.

Other than that I'm clutching at bats

I haven't personally encountered anybody who cares one way or the other. But generally speaking, Covid19 is a much more specific description of the virus, so why not use the official name? Seems sort of obvious. But I don't care if people call it the Wuhan Virus, or whatever they've been using.

But recently a lot of people have been blurring the lines between attacking attacking the Chinese government, and attacking whatever perception they have of Chinese culture and attacking all ethnic Chinese people. It's been sort of sad to see. It's not surprising that Chinese people are fed up with it, and they have every right to stand up for themselves.

I can agree with a lot of this.
I too haven't encountered anyone calling it anything but the virus or corona.
But then, this is the only place I express or hear political opinion.

"Jesus Fucking Christ can't we even have a pandemic without people getting offended?"

From what I've heard them say, they see it as an extension of growing animosity towards Chinese people, in general. They are noticing an uptick in racism against Asians, and hearing people calling this the "Chinese Virus" or "Wuhan Virus" likely seems like an extension of that racism to them.

I think people are saying some really messed up things about Asians, and disguising it with, "I'm talking about culture, not people." Many people living here are still connected to that culture, and they have family in those countries. In the last few days I've repeatedly heard Chinese people referred to as unfeeling robots, and I was told that is not an offensive thing to say because it's about culture. No, that's about people. I know a few recent immigrants from China, they are not unfeeling robots and I'm sure they'd be pretty upset if you said that to their face about their friends and family.

In another thread right now, a guy is saying the ethnic Chinese are meek, deceitful, underhanded, and accurately represented by old stereotypical cartoons.

Asian people are hearing all of this, and it's ridiculous for us to not expect them to be fed up with it all at this point.

Damn, that's a thoughtful reply.

I feel sorry for your mother.

The difference is i'm not justifying it with any type of mealy-mouthed apologia now, am I?

Who did that? Show me a quote.

See, I think you're backed into a corner now. You're attempting to stereotype one culture, while shriveling away from stereotypes of your own culture in your own country.

I never came remotely close to apologizing for anything, but this is going to be your attempt at a deflection.

Why are conservatives so offended by calling it by its actual name?

Do you know how blacks are getting treated in china right now?

As a half-asian I appreciate your honesty but it is what it is: a Chinese virus. Not a Japanese virus or a Cambodgian illness it is well.... a Chinese virus.

It is a Chinese virus because of Chinese culture, Milanese people don't eat bat meat. Spanish towns don't have weird wet markets like in some areas in China. Those European citizens are paying a heavy price because of some Chinese habits that have endangered public health.

It is a Chinese virus because of the CCP's cover-up and their initial inability or unwillingness to keep wildlife trade under control. Had they inspected those wet markets more rigorously and regularly this shitstorm would have been avoided. I think they're going to start doing that from here on out but it's too late.

It is a Chinese virus because well.... it comes from China. I don't hear Spaniards bitch about the Spanish flu and it didn't even come from Spain or South America. Chinese people will have to face what a minority of German-Americans went through after WWII or what some muslims had to deal with after 9/11. It will sting for a few months then it'll go away gradually. It's nothing compared to the jobs that people have lost or the deaths of thousands of loving grandpas.
