Why can't people get behind Islam like they did Khabib?

Multiple reasons

Khabib got a big boost after fighting Conor and all the drama associated with it. Islam hasn't fought anyone on that level of popularity.

Islam has a weaker personality and has a soft weak voice. He comes across more socially awkward. Khabib is also better looking.

Khabib has an aggressive, brutal looking style. Islam is more measured and is more often boring.

I think islam has a pretty large fanbase, and once he starts defending against people in his division, he'll get more and more respect. Khabib also was somewhat more of a sympathetic figure because he had Conor as a foil and most people look like good people in comparison to conor.

Yeah and Khabib is more well spoken, that and the Conor rivalry is what has made him more marketable than Islam, thus far. But overall I think Islam has a pretty decent fanbase, too. It's hard to imagine he hasn't inherited at least 90% of the real Khabib loyalist fans.

I know this is random but in a way Islam has the curse Kobe had to deal with in the NBA being constantly compared to MJ...this ones even worse as Khabib and his father mentored Islam from day one. When you're a ctrl-c version of someone else you're forever doomed to be compared to that person.

Islam is overshadowed by the non-fans because we've already seen a better non defeated version of him.

Islam looks noticeably more inbred than Khabib. Cousin marriage remains a big part of Dagestani culture.

Islam is naturally extremely awkward. He breathes with his mouth open and seems fascinated by childish things (trying to ride donkeys and treating dwarves like babies). When he tries to talk, he says very corny things, like how he thought repeatedly referring to Volkanovski as "short guy" was the funniest thing ever.

Mainly because Khabib kind of started the Dagestani phenomenon. He had the crazy hats, the funny English and perspective and also the whole Connor "rivalry." His dad also being a legendary trainer and that whole wrestling with a Bear video is the stuff of legends.

Islam isn't cocky, he's confident. There's a difference. Connor was cocky. Tony F. was just plain crazy. The man put in the work, you have to have that belief.
