when kicking do you keep your hands up or throw your one down?

Ah cool, i loved those full-contact Karate/TKD guys from back then.

But i think their views on fight strategy might be a little dated, especially with the whole emergence and integration of Thai boxing that started happening around that time.

EDIT: not to mention the addition of low kicks, elbows & clinch/knee rules,

I fight in an orthodox stance (left hand, and leg forward.) so when I throw a right kick I take my right hand and throw it down to counter-balance my weight and also get maximum power from my hips then I bring my left hand over to my chin some I have some sort of protection from any counter, plus my right shoulder rolls up slightly so I have added protection there as well.

lets look at the facts, all muay thai fighters drop the arm, not some, all.
all thai teachers teach you to drop the arm.not some but all.
and all fight videos and instructional videos about muay thai show the arm dropping. again not some but all.
anyone that says keep it up is not right in my opinion, there are not different ways to do it, there is only the right way and the wrong way.
guys not dropping the arm are flat out wrong, and i doubt have really been trained,or need a new trainer.

i cant explain it... kinda drunk. but there is a way to properly defend yourself when you kick and drop your hands... its kinda like throwing a jab but still keeping your chin tucked under your shoulder.... know what i mean?

what ever... thats the way i was taught... and im not gonna let anybody on the internet tell me different. i could be wrong... but it works for me. and alot of top fighters :)

Basically its up to you. When you kick low kicks your instinct basically let your hands go down. But when you train to let your hands to keep high while kick then its good for you..

you know, there are other ways to fight, other styles and other countrys besides Thailand that people exist in

Oww, that definitely fractured something, or at the very least left a disgusting shin shaped bruise.

LOL, the last thing i would EVER be thinking of is countering with a punch if one of remy's legs were flying at me full speed.

Get outta the way!!! lol

...wow look at the deep and excruciating pain in gohkan's face. ugghh.

Remy has the most amazing gifs, I hadn't seen that one. I especially like the one where he ko's Vernon White with a flying roundhouse kick to the head. The replay makes his head look like someone smacked a speedbag.

lol, I just can see the annoyance level rising for people that enjoy other arts outside of Muay Thai.

"Damn Muay Thai elitists! There are other ways to fight besides Muay Thai!"

I agree, and i respect other arts, so i try hard not to be biased, so don't flame me, flame that other dude :P

ok there are other styles but i was under the impression we were talking about the thai kick, infact i'm quite certain everyone was.
should a thai kick be described in the way thais do it, i think so.

I don't really care honestly, the Thais are the ultimate kickers in my eyes. I mean compare a shin kick to any other kick, no comparison.

Ok, i'll stop nuthugging now.

Say if a thai fighter keeps his hands up does that mean they are a bad at kicking?
Maybe they are taught that way but if one thai fighter decides to keep his hands up because he enjoys the extra protection should he go find a new trainer because he hasnt been really been trained the "correct way"?

He may think he likes it but the fact is that the extra protection is heavily outweighed by the extra power and better form of the kick itself.

The scoring in Muay Thai lies in proper technique execution.

Yes, and I agree, but this thread has evolved into how to properly throw a Thai kick (with lots of fun insults being tossed into the mix). For a better understanding of why we are responding this way, see BrooklynBJJ's posts in this thread.

The power you get from throwing the arm back outweighs the extra protection IF the kick is thrown properly. That means that you stepped off on a 45 degree angle OFF THE LINE and to the outside of your opponents other arm AND you are in KICKING DISTANCE. If you stand right in front of your opponent while throwing your kick and are in his arm's reach, of course you're gonna get punched in the face.

I throw both my hands down when I kick to look badass like, come on hit me.nah really I block with one hand ,keep a distance, balance with the other.
