What is your general opinion on Johnny Hendricks ?

Indeed , he was unmatched , his 2012-2013 run at welter weight was unheard of
I remember thinking Fitch would end his hype. But then he knocked him out with the first punch landed. His string of KO’s on his title run were pretty scary. The other that comes to mind was Martin Kampman.

Not really unique. Chris Weidman had a similar career around the same time. Upset a goat, then got a couple of good fights after. Ever since then, been a pretty rough decline.

Also, both whiny and delusional wrestlers, both had their careers take a sudden and immediate nosedive when USADA testing came into effect. Practically twins.

and that was no coincidence. they followed the same path for a reason...

and that would have to be hendricks' legacy. did well for a while... with help. and then fell off when help was removed.

Nah. Weidman is at least a has been. Hendricks is a never was.

PS: people need to remember that the fight with GSP took place in Nov 2013, under the old (pre-2017) rules. If that fight was judged under the new rules, Hendricks would have won ..but it wasn't.

He is from the OKC area, graduated high school the same year I did, and is among the greatest wrestling talents my state ever produced (Danny Hodge is by far the greatest, but Hendricks is definitely up there in the same class). He won three state high school championships (which is no small feat, high school wrestling here is as competitive as high school football in Texas), three Big 12 wrestling championships, two NCAA wrestling championships, and was a four time NCAA All-American.

His rise in the sport of MMA was kinda meteoric, he had the one loss to Rick Story, and didn't lose again until the GSP fight, a fight the majority felt he won. Then after losing the rematch to Robbie, he fell off a cliff. Based on what I know of Oklahoma HS wrestling, I have no doubts that he'd been using PEDs since at least that point, all of the wrestlers at my own high school used them, you almost had to if you wanted to be competitive in wrestling here. My school's team was successful in 6A, the same class that Hendricks' school competed in, in which Hendricks was the best the state produced at the time. His decline in MMA coincided with the advent of USADA in the UFC, so the many on this site through the years that had noted as much were probably correct about his nosedive. Wouldn't doubt if it was a combo of no longer being able to have a competitive advantage mixed with fatigue from cutting weight since at least junior high, and maybe elementary school.

Debatable fights with GSP, Koscheck and Condit. Chin and power made him an overachiever who ironically likely unachieved due to lack of discipline. If I remember correctly he was kind of an in-betweener size wise, a little big for WW, too small for MW. Top tier guy regardless.

Hendricks was the ufc welterweight champion
Won a vacant title and then lost it immediately. Went 2-5 afterwards to finish his career.

Weidman on the other hand actually beat the reigning champ, then successfully defended the title 3 times. He fell off after losing the title but only 2 guys at mw have more defenses than him.

Weidman had a real era. Hendricks is a footnote known mainly for a close fight that he lost. He’s closer to Gus than he is to Weidman.

Hendricks had a really strong win streak before he challenged for the title though. He was definitely a top guy. The competition he faced to earn his title shot was elite.

now that we know how his career went, what is your general opinion on Hendricks ? We know that it’s was 50/50 against George , up to this day a lot of people think that Hendricks should had won. We also know that he finished is career terribly against an ex porn star in a bare knuckle fight. Overall , was winning against an all time great like gsp and ending is career badly like he did is kind of unique ?
I'm probably in the minority, but I think he's a guy that gets shit on for no reason. I feel for him as he has severe binge eating disorders (not excusing missed weight) as I basically missed out on an MMA career myself because I had eating disorders of my own. I've never gotten the idea that Hendricks juiced -- folks just don't get how debilitating poor dietary choices can be to one's performance.

Great fighter. Gets a lot of shit for being a whiner when he really did get screwed in a couple of decisions. Spluttered at the end of hiss career with some weight misses and poor performance. Post USADA performances seem to support PED abuse claims unfortunately. Ultimately - to me - he seems underappreciated. greatly maligned and underrated. He beat the GOAT.
