I’m not 100% sure what Dickens meant by his comment.

Are we 100% sure that it wasn't that if the new territories were not going to be slave states, they'd just outvote the South on the matter anyways, so the South figured that they'd nip that in the bud by seceding?

Maybe. But secession was about more than just that aspect. I’m sure that was one of the factors though.

You know, you may want to look into Sherman’s history before you hale him as the great liberator. He had strong southern sympathies. He lived in Louisiana for years before the war. He became quite comfortable in the lifestyle. His only objection was secession from the Union.

Do a little homework and you will be a bit surprised.
