I'm not saying you should be out there enthusiastically supporting what so far is an entirely non-progressive platform I'm just saying that equating the Dems to what the Republicans are doing in this very moment is just fucking retarded. Yes, the Dems are horrible for those things absolutely
Giving the dems a pass simply because you perceive the republicans as worst is not only the R word, it is partisan hackery.
but do you really think a Trump 2.0 admin is gonna be the place to draw any kind of concession? You think the GOP is gonna reach across the aisle and work with progressives to abolish DHS and defund the Pentagon? Tell me how far you think you'll get with that strategy.
Other than Trump (offhandedly) saying he may extend medicare during the pandemic, the republicans have never, ever offered a concession to the left or progressives. Trump hasn't, W didn't, H.W. didn't. Reagan assuredly didn't.
Republicans birthed homeland and the patriot act, I don't expect them to give it up. This is not something that I expect. I never said it was a good strategy to reach across party aisles and ask the republicans to pass a lefty platform. Those weren't my words.
I gave a direct analogy to a time where they did the same and we got jobs programs, unemployment, social security, etc out of it.
Obama wanted to cut social security then Sanders threatened to primary him. Obama couldn't even convince his majority Congress to pass medicare for all or even a public option. He didn't even try.
But hey I get it. If your goal is to refuse to work inside the system, if your belief is that the change we need will only come from a total system collapse then by all means focus on accelerationism. Be warned, though, history shows that the left routinely suffers most under those conditions.
Work inside the system? The system has failed. The party of the people is the party of the rich. CARES passed 96-0.
I don't need to be warned, I'm aware that the richest country to ever exist (before the pandemic) had 50 million with no healthcare, 80% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, 40% can't afford a $500 emergency, 2.5 million homeless children, dirty water in Flint and many other cities, I could go on.
My point about the bill is that, while we can blame Dems for having a myopic approach to the crisis, they have at least passed something to stop the bleeding.
Whereas the Republicans are telling us they want to end any UI bonus, they begrudgingly approve of stimulus, they don't want to give states or schools funding, etc. If the GOP wins in November you can bet your sweet ass there won't be UI extensions, there won't be further stimulus, there won't be eviction protection.
This is more partisan hackery. Both parties went home while the country suffers. There are no excuses.
I didn't see Pelosi on the floor of the House demanding action. I didn't see Sanders, Warren, Brown, the squad create a united front demanding swift action immediately. They didn't say that they weren't leaving DC until this situation is handled. Instead they all went home.
I didn't see the Obamas and Clintons hold an impromptu zoom or media scrum to demand decisive action. The Obama said on their podcast that people fed up with the system are selfish. This is not exactly the way to get the 100 million people who didn't vote to vote for the Dems.
We have seen party unity. The way the party united behind Biden and against Sanders is the way I expect them to get behind a bill (if they really wanted it).
This at least paints a place where a Biden admin will be, at least with the Dems we progressives know where the starting point will be. From there we can demand from them to pass a UBI, pass UI bonus through 2021, pass a rent/mortgage cancellation, etc.
Biden hasn't even offered you a concession when he was still contending with Sanders. He said "don't vote for me" when pushed about climate change. Biden said a UBI encourages people not to work. Biden is adamantly against medicare for all. And like I said, he wanted to cut social security along with Obama.
If you vote for him, you give away your leverage. You can't then demand something when you have given him what he wants. You have seen countless UFC fighters cave-in to Dana when they have leverage. You have seen this countless times with the Dems. Time for lessons to be learned.
From there we can demand from them to pass a UBI, pass UI bonus through 2021, pass a rent/mortgage cancellation, etc.
LOL this is Jayapal's strategy. Just wait until January and then we can do something. WTF?
People are hungry and worried about housing now. You can't ask them to wait 5 months while you try to get it together. If Biden loses, the new strategy would be to just wait until 2025 and then we can make change.
With the House and the presidency up for grabs, the DNC platform committee voted against medicare for all 125-36. It sounds like they are listening to your "demands". lol
So, tell me, how far do you think progressives will get negotiating with a lame-duck 2nd term president who represents a party that's made it clear they don't even want to offer basic assistance to workers in the midst of a pandemic and economic depression?
Again, I don't expect a republican president to do jack about climate change, UBI, healthcare, homelessness, food insecurities, clean waters, job programs, school programs, police violence except to make them worse.
Biden hasn't even offered lip service about these issues when hasn't even been officially nominated. He won't win he gets the nomination and he won't if he wins. Good Lord man, he was VP for 8 years. He as VP only attempted to increase the minimum wage once. He was in the Senate for 30 years. You know what he is about.
