Thank you for this. I heard some vague news about it but this is the most specific I've seen. Another reason to just wait and see. Especially in recent years I've decided that, with the exception of Nintendo, there's really no reason to rush to get a new console. I learned that the hard way with Destiny and Dragon Age Inquisition when the PS4/XOne came out. I realized there was no reason to get the consoles right away.Valve working on another headset with 120 degree FOV "Field Of View" and optics potentially the same as what is in the Apple VR headset. Word is Apple been working closely with Valve as a part of their headset development in fact Valve created a version of the Index for Apple to hand out to developers. A lot of news coming out about Apple stand alone headset and seems that they want class leading horizontal and Vertical FOV of at least 120 degree similar to the Valve Index. Apple using not one but two 3rd generation M3 SOC with at least 8K total resolution from custom display chips. Apples price for the headset seems to be in the 3000 dollar range and likely limited to Universities and big corporate customers at first.
EDIT more news Apple to announce the VR headset this spring according to reports. I bet the Valve Index replacement will be announced at the same time. But unlike the report I heard that Valve Index's where given to developers by Apple because they view it the best offering 120 Degree FOV. 120 degree FOV seems to come up a lot when talking about early leaked reports on the headset. The company that developed crazy optics for another headset was acquired by Apple likely leading me to believe that there could be more then one panel per eye giving it a reported 4K per eye.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple intends to announce its long-awaited AR/VR headset product in the spring, before WWDC in June. The device would go on sale later in the fall of 2023, matching analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s timeline.
Gurman says prototype hardware has already been seeded to a small number of developers for testing. However, he says the device is far from finished and Apple still has to work out several “kinks” in the hardware and software.
Gurman says that previous reporting that the device was originally set to be unveiled in January (this month) was accurate — but that timeline slipped.
With an introduction to the world in the spring, Apple would then likely follow up with detailed resources and tooling for developers at the WWDC conference in June.
To squash all the outstanding bugs and todo’s, Gurman says Apple has “roped in resources” from other departments. This means some other projects inside the company have suffered delays as a result.
Gurman does not anticipate major changes for AirPods and Apple Watch lines. The Mac roadmap includes an Apple Silicon Mac Pro, M2 spec bumps for the MacBook Pro, and a possible 15-inch size of the MacBook Air. A new big HomePod should launch this year, largely resembling the 2018 model in design.

VR is in the same boat as 3D, it will never be more than a small niche fad until they finally figure out a way to make it work without having to strap a contraption to your face
Pretty funny timing since 3D panels for laptops made a comeback at CES this year and they're being positioned as a competitor to VR for productivity.Yes and No.
I liken VR to 3D as one of those fads that resurfaces every few years because every time it is rejected there is the idea "it wasn't it's time yet" as opposed to acceptance that it is a useless novelty. I don't think it'll ever catch on but at the same time I doubt this is the last we see of it.
I am actually interested in the headset after seeing a number of reviews I just worry that the company always seem to have problems delivering and lack of passthrough is a problem for me. The FOV and the visual quality with a simulated HDR like quality looks amazing. As a pure VR only experience looks amazing.I can't wait for this. Not sure when it will ship to me since I didn't placea reserve until early december. It looks like the first 200 headsets will ship by January 22 and that if you order it just right now, it will arrive sometime in March
I'm curious on how it will run on a 3080 RTX card. Im still trying to look for that 4090 card without scalpers selling them at outrageous pricesI am actually interested in the headset after seeing a number of reviews I just worry that the company always seem to have problems delivering and lack of passthrough is a problem for me. Unfortunately MRTV noticed issues running the Primax 8k on a 3080Ti. When he ran the crystal he was running it on 4090 card ran great. He thinks it could still run fine on a 4080.I'm curious on how it will run on a 3080 RTX card. Im still trying to look for that 4090 card without scalpers selling them at outrageous prices
There is also one major difference is crystal having aspherical lenses which gives a wider sweet spot looking inUnfortunately MRTV noticed issues running the Primax 8k on a 3080Ti. When he ran the crystal he was running it on 4090 card ran great. He thinks it could still run fine on a 4080.
Crystal is 3K per eye vs 4k per eye on the Primax 8k.
For the aspherical lens they where lucky because Apple bought the company after they secured the patents rights to use the on their product. I don't know how it effect others in that space because if the story that Facebook spent 10 billion on patents and recently just spent another undisclosed sum on another type of lens. On a side note it looks like Apple working with Steam in some level. At least a limited number of games get to run on Steam Link on Apple. There is also one major difference is crystal having aspherical lenses which gives a wider sweet spot looking in
