Don't really hear any news about any upcoming games, no boom happening as expected. Still niche and will be for the future. The idea of VR looks only good on paper. I was sceptical from day 1. Big fan of Half Life but even the half baked game they released for it is not enough to make me buy it. Do you own VR? Still using or gathering dust?
 
It's just not something I'm interested in getting into. People have told me how much better VR is but I like playing games the way I've been playing them my whole life. I also got young kids that spend weekends with me and I need to be able to see what's going on in my home.
 
nope PSVR2 coming out early next year. Still not many killer apps though.
 
It's likely just a comfort reason (also limited gameplay) as to why it's still so niche. With normal games all you need is a standard dual analog or d-pad controller or a keyboard and mouse, it's pick up and play, takes no prep, no extra accessories; that is not the case for vr. You add to that that movement (walking, running, etc.) in so many vr games is still so stilted, it really is two steps forward then a step back (not so fast Paula Abdul). You take all of that then add a big price tag and strong hardware requirements on top of it and yeah it's going to be niche for a while.
 
It shouldn't be, but companies are far more interested in easy profits over experimentation. VR is the logical next evolutionary step in gaming, but nobody has really gotten it right(or at least past it's stock novelty phase), and it seems that few are wiling to try and make that next step. They're too afraid of failure. Imagine if when the first few games that tried 3D and failed, set the tone for the industry's view on it. We'd be playing 2D Mario Bros with photo-realistic graphics. That's where VR seems to be right now. They're not going back to the drawing board, and trying to innovate, like in generations past. They're just admitting defeat, and going back to their comfort zone.

Maybe Nintendo can get this shit done down the road, whenever they decide to give a shit about it. If anyone is crazy enough to try and give it the special sauce it needs to break through, it would be them.
 
I have a Quest 2. It’s a fun medium but overall wearing the headset just gets tiring over time. I don’t see VR ever being anything more than a party prop and/or tech device. It’s closer to a fad than these companies want to admit.

There's some weird energy in your post. Half Life: Alyx is one of the best games of all time.

With that said there's some cool stuff in VR but don't expect it to be completely mainstream with mountains of AAA titles hitting it. It's a niche product as far as gaming goes.

There are a lot of interesting applications outside of gaming; as an example I've seen it used as a training tool for fire fighters. They wear all the gear they'd normally wear and the jackets are designed with electric heaters in them that 'burn' from the direction of the fire. The hose they hold is attached to a wheel so when they pull the trigger they get a physical reaction simulating the force of the water exiting the hose.

It will likely always be niche but it’s constantly advancing and will always maintain a market.

RE7 was literally a completely different experience when played in VR and only something VR could deliver.

It's a 10/10 game for me, absolutely mindblowing from start to finish. I'd rate it about the same as how I felt whe I first played Half Life 2 - absolutely stunned. From the moment I started the game until the 15 or so hours later that I finished it, I was in utter awe at how fucking incredible everything was.

I'd have a lot of difficulty rating games in the top against each other because sometimes I like different genres at different times, and it's likely I'll forget some key game I should have listed. But in the spirit of giving it a go, here's 10 games I'd consider for the list and in no particular order:

Half Life: Alyx
Half Life 2 (and its various mods, incl. Counter-Strike)
Doom 1/2
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicka Obscura
Diablo 2
Skyrim
Fallout: New Vegas
Portal 1/2
Dragon Age: Origins
Mass Effect Trilogy

Somewhere I'd like to fit Vampire: The Masqurade: Bloodlines too. In fact, I'd like to add a few more here and there, and if you ask me on a different day it'd be a slightly different list.

They made it pretty simple with the Quest 2, there's no wires, controllers are included, no pc or console needed just pick up and play.

It's outsold the Xbox Series X and is just behind PS5 in units sold.

I work in highway construction and our tech guys are using augmented reality for mapping out utility lines and VR training for heavy vehicles, there's definitely good practical uses for it.

The Quest 2 has sold 15 million units, about on a par with the PS5/Xbox X.

There's not that many killer apps though. The Walking Dead game is fantastic, Resident Evil and I love playing Thrill of the Fight as a workout.

GTA , Assassins Creed and a cool looking Ghostbusters game are on the way. But I'd still say its early days.
 
Not enough games.
Too expensive.
Looks like a pain to get set up.

Until those three issues are remedied, I'm not interested.
 
Racing games with 120 degree FOV is still expensive but gives an amazing effects. Headset like Steam Index are older generation an Oculus Quest weight, poorly balanced an 92 degree FOV limit interest.

Quest still 5 to 10 million sold. People are getting a poor taste because of Meta Quest. Software update in Quest sometimes locks up during updates.

Facebook next generation headset adds eye tracking for reducing render work on the SOC allowing more detail renders. The new headset uses pancake optics allowing reduced weight but similar FOV "that's disappointing for a 1500 dollar headset". Better all around experience but poor FOV.

For simulations higher end headsets such as HTC Vive Pro 2 and the new Pimax offering wider field of view above 110 degrees. Pimax offers 200 Degree horizontal field of view.

Headsets are getting better an offering less weight, better field of view, higher resolution, comfort an much better sound an other key technologies.
 
I think it'll be the next generation as kids grow up with it being a thing. Our generation of gamers is just used to sitting on the couch, picking up a controller and playing.
 
VR is fine. Once they get a lighter headset and the battery life sorted out then it would be a much better experience. Glove improvements and being able to move in on a platform is somewhat important. It's like smart phones. You need to give it some time to grow. The first iphone I bought was such a piece of crap.
 
a friend told me that its great for that immersive porn experience :D

aside from that, its still in its infancy. when the tech gets more powerful, lighter, more comfortable with better controls it will get more market saturation then more AAA rated games will appear.
