Because Volk was always going to be one half of the next FW title shot no matter what & Lopes is more of a fan favorite / in the UFC's good graces than Evloev is. Meritocracy wise yeah Evloev likely deserves it more than Lopes but it is what it is.

To add on to what you're saying, Volk is probably getting paid a large amount of money per fight. UFC probably wants to give him big fights to justify what they're having to pay him.

It's going to be a wild size difference. Topuria was a young 135er that grew into a 145er...odd body shape, dudes thick and dense with lots of muscle like his pro, small framed for 145 but not small exactly. Islam is legitimately a huge LW though and both times Topuria has been dropped in his career was to a left high kick vs Goncalves on the region scene and off the switch in the UFC vs that British guy.

Ilia is really athletic and has really grown as a fighter, has a strong wrestling base and arguably the best hands in the game. Wouldnt surprize me a ton if he caught Islam but man...it's a hard fight and Islam will be all the way out launching left kicks and looking for counters or immediately looking to grapple when Ilia gets into his distance. I hope we get Ilia vs Oliveira or Poirier first and I'd like Arman vs Islam II still.

Doubt it, the gap in abilities between Topuria & Lopes is night and day. Lopes has 2 rounds to get this done or he will drown vs Volk, Lopes is a front runner and not going to be that dangerous if the fight goes the whole 5 rounds.

Yeah Lopes pretty much has to knock Volk out to win this I think. Just because he got knocked out by Islam (he should've never taken that fight) and Topuria doesn't mean he's at the stage where he's going to get knocked out by just about anybody which is where he has to be at to lose to Lopes.

I don’t like that situation either, but I believe it’s preferable to this because at least the belt has some semblance of legitimacy. Ideally, fighters should fight in their appropriate weight class, and if they become champ, defend it as long as possible.

Volk renegotiated his contract during the negotiations for taking that short notice Islam rematch --
I'm 99 percent certain volk put a rematch clause for his FW belt in his contract when he renegotiated it.
