Topuria Title Defenses

Guys back then earned title shots after a few wins, so naturally title defenses are higher. Nowadays the standards are much higher. This is a fact because there are double the amount of fighters as there was 10 years ago.

Makes no sense. Contenders have to fight more or win more to get title shots so Champions have less defenses? Double the amount of fighters means less defenses?

Aldo beat Mike Brown for the WEC title on Nov 18, 2009
He held that title until Dec 15, 2015


9 defenses in that time over 2218 days plus the winning the title and losing to McGregor. 11 fights. Ilia has had his last 11 fights between June 16, 2018 and Oct 26, 2024. That is 11 fights in 2324 days. Difference of just over 3 months.

Seems like fighters fight on the same pace.

Yes he faced the best of that day but most of them were a step down co.pared to today. The top 4 are arguably as good as the top 4 of today.

Prime Edgar, Mendes, Faber, Brown are as good as Volk, Holloway, Evloev, Lopes.

After that the opponents from back then are not as good IMO



That's cuz you don't know how to read. The discussion is on the hypothetical that Topuria fights and beats Volk (again) Evloev and Lopes. I'm making the case that he should.

I can read and made it clear. He isn't even at 2 defenses and is already talking about leaving the division. 9 > 4 even with the magic Hypothetcial defenses that will not happen.

Lets see Topuria get to those 4 and add 5 top 10 defenses without a loss? Guy is at 1 Defense FFS. He isn't worth comparing to the divisional GOAT unless he gets really close.

Is Izzy better than Anderson as a MW champion? 7 title fight wins in a row at MW if you include his "Interim" fight, a loss at LHW sandwiched in there, won the MW belt back and lost it. Does that outweigh a 16 fight winning streak with 12 MW title wins (technically 11 with Lutter being a non title fight due to Lutter's weight miss) plus 3 LHW fights that he won?

It was almost close to time to talk about it but 12 > 7. Izzy didn't quite get there.
Even at 4 Topuria isn't worth considering and I will remind you he is at ONE WHOLE DEFENSE.

If Topuria starches Volk again (so its no fluke), and starches Evloev and Lopes it's not 1 for 1 in value when comparing Aldo winning decisions in close or underwhelming fights

We will have to agree to disagree. FYI Aldo finished Prime Cub, KZ, Mendes, Gamburyan, and Mike Brown. Pretty equal to Volk, Max and guys Topuria hasn't yet fought.

Once you leave top 3 IMO the competition is better than KZ, Cub and Gamb... that's all I'm saying.

I think we both agree that Topuria needs to defend it at least against evloev and lopes and ideally more than that to be in GOAT FW talks
