I cut a hand to the bone once but no biggie cause I had hospital type gaus and tape. When I went to get it looked at at the emergency they asked me where the hell I got it from cause they don't typically see it... supermarket.

You should always have the very basics. Not just because it's a possible pandemic.

Nah, it has something like a 3% fatality rate. Its low. So why quarantine millions of people over something with a kill rate lower than influenza. It doesn't make sense.
Your numbers are off. The kill rate of the seasonal flu is only something like 0.01%.

No, Washington times, daily beast, ect.

I think maybe someone legit ran the story on the bio lab existing and citing the previous US complaint on potential for a disease escaping that lab.
Considering Russia is filthy, I think I’ll stick to believing American media outlets .. thanks

My point is that it doesn't make sense to quarantine 15 million people based on a virus that might kill 2 or 3 percent of the people that get it. The measures to contain it just seem pretty extreme. Hopefully this doesn't get out of hand and spread into a massive pandemic and I get that is what they are trying to stop. Then I read this while going through the news links.

China’s deadly coronavirus may have the same death rate as Spanish flu, an expert has warned.

Professor Neil Ferguson, from Imperial College London, said the current rate of disease could be comparable to the death rate of Spanish flu.

The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 is widely regarded as “the deadliest in history”, and is believed to have infected around 500 million people worldwide, killing between 20 and 50 million.

In the UK, it is thought around 228,000 thousand people died of Spanish flu from around 10 million people who were thought to have been infected - a death rate of around 2%.

Basically in poor countries the kill rate will be higher and if it spreads fast it could be a bad situation in terms of those killed worldwide. Spanish flu infected 500,000,000 and killed as many as 50,000,000. The kill rate may have been as high as 10% in some areas but as low as 2 or 3% in the U.K. So what that all chalks up to is that the beginning of the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-1920 may have started off looking a lot like this coronavirus situation. This is all assuming China isn't lying or covering up and things are actually worse than televised.

IDK man... 2 or 3% is a lot in a virus that spreads so fast like this one.

I am not mathematician but if you go onto that virus tracker u will see something like 250 dead and 250 recovered which seems like odds of surviving are around 50%

How safe would be assume that some of the 11K infected (guess they are getting treatment) will make it through and will flip the numbers?

I honestly think some people ITT is blowing this out of proportion.

Dude, China is covering this shit up. If they say true, the whole economy will fall apart and cause worldwide panic.

Wanna bet something? Oh, forget it.. I'm poor. Still thinking that this is being blown out of proportion by people with a little too much free time.

Maybe if we want to have a better idea of the virus impact we should follow closely the cases in the US, Europe, etc. I trust them way more.

Said that.. I'm in no way saying that they should not close airports and cancel all flights. Quarantine that shit.
I'm actually pissed off that they haven't done that. I hope people in charge is held accountable when someone dies because of them wanting to be polite to China.

Hopefully it gets stopped. We haven't had a major pandemic in about 100 years so we may be due for one. I'm not sure what would happen if it spread like wildfire through a third world country. The mortality rate would almost certainly be more than 2-3%.

450,000 people could die and you think they should just ignore it?

Pretty normal. Last year at Wal-Mart two people died in line ahead of me. A Haz Mat team showed up to inspect the body. The first had died from dehydration from being in line so long so they just left her there, but the second died of the common cold. As a precaution, they burnt the body on the spot and killed the people directly ahead of and behind the guy in the line and burned their bodies as well. The cashier too. Luckily, I had my groceries divided by one of those little plastic sticks on the conveyor belt, so everything was cool. The lady behind me was visibly shaken and I was like, 'Don't worry, it's just the cold going around.'
I hate it when that happens. So I started using self checkout.

Not at all, I've said repeatedly I hope this thing goes nowhere and there is no major outbreak. It just seems like there is a contradiction in peoples attitudes. Some people are laughing it off and saying no big deal, meanwhile China is putting entire cities under quarantine.

normally, I am pretty reserved in terms of pushing the panic buttons and not being chicken little.

however, the manner in which many countries have responded, in terms of shutting down borders, airline travel, not to mention the mass quarantines...

this is different from the can "outbreaks" like SARS, Swine flu etc.

I've begun preparing for the Apocalypse. I've identified hundreds of disease free people that i could potentially eat if it came down to cannibalism.
