I think the mortality rate is lower than just taking the deaths / confirmed cases. It's flu season and many people will unknowingly ride it out. It's not like the lower class in China can afford proper healthcare.

This is actually bad news as many will think they only have a cold and will continue to go to work and push through it. Guessing 2-5x the number of people are actually infected as symptoms can range from common cold to flu/death. You could potentially have 100-300 people infected in a city before one is serious enough to warrant a hospital to send a sample to the CDC to be confirmed. By then it's too late.

This allows the virus to spread easier but may lead to more overall deaths as it spreads out of control. If the mortality rate was higher it would actually be easier to track.
