Media Umar first statement: I don't think I lost

So I am happy Merab won and Umar losing is much better for the sport as it shows how competitive the top 5 is and it keeps the UFC in check reminding them that they don't actually have any control over who is champion. BUT, Technically Umar might of won 3 rounds but he looked like he was sleepwalking by the 5 which is something I have never seen from that camp. Umar looked dangerously tired to the point that he is really lucky he did not suffer a crazy head injury or something and menwhile Merab was having a party and talking to Rogan hamming up to the crowd. I am sorry but you got to love the guy after doing that and possibly losing the first 2 rounds, recovering from staph, being the underdog and having a "broken back" which can't be true lol. MTF Merab, lol !
Volk vs Islam was not close at all except the last minute of the fight
This fight was closer with both fighters having 2 rounds a piece
Nurmi was having a good 5th round until Merab clocked him with a right and then took over
He should take this as a learning experience (which I am sure he will).
If he is truly saying he didn't lose the fight it could be a simple morale building lie one tells to themselves
No man, Islam sealed the p4p in my eyes this weekend and his attitude about who he fights is badass but he still had issues in the Volk fight much like Umar had issues from 4 - 5 this weekend. Even Islam was nervous when they were announcing the scores in the end and Volk was clowning around to the crowd while Islam hugged his back for 4 minutes. To say Volk vs Islam 1 was not close does not track as its very similar to what happened to Umar this weekend as Islam was more tired than I have ever seen him after a fight and Volk is the only guy to go the whole fight with Islam besides the guy who knocked him out and Arman in 2022. Think about it. Islam just submited 2 of the best BJJ guys in LW and also subbed a very expirienced DP in the 5th eventhough he was really hurt which he said himself this weekend at the post fight interview. Olivera pulling out of the Islam rematch changed featherweight and LW drastically and I think Arman pulling is going to change everything again for LW/FW. For example Ilia moving up and Islam going to fight DDP after him while Max now needs to fight Arman/Olivera but now Arman might start regretting not doing the rematch. I have even heard a rummor that the UFC has already mapped out something huge for Islam and its not Olivera or Arman. I have know idea what that is but I read a rumor its something related to a 165 division. Honestley LW is a mess right now its very close to being LHW/HW is they don't do something. Fucking Jiri vs Alex 3 is depressing as shit but that is what LW will become unless they figure out who to match with Olivera/Arman and Islam

Respect your candor but Volkanovski was dropped controlled and outstruck in the first fight
He did however land the most effective offence in the 5th and clearly won the round
That would still make it 4-1 or 3-2 at best
Not close

What, a fighter says he didn't lose a fight, shocking. <{vega}>

Not all 3-2 fights are close. The first 2 rounds were close then it wasn't close. He can tell himself whatever he needs too.
all rounds were close. I thought he won round 5, he landed better shots and outpointed merab. Merab won the theatrics, and landed a takedown that swayed the judges. 0 control time.

The tide was turning for Volk in the end with Islam the most exhausted I had ever seen. I also did not realize they gave volk a knockdown and 3m of control time. Plus Islam rested a full round which was frustrating the crowd and they should of made him stand up just like they did to Merab when he fought Sean. Honestly the full round on the ground with no sub attempts and looking like he did at the end of the 5 plus the fact he would of lost if the fight was 30 seconds longer is why people call this a close fight.

He didn’t win. He did well in the first 2 rounds then he began to fade. Khabib’s technical coaching was pretty bad. Why ask Umar to wrestle when he was starting to get tired?
All I heard from Khabib was "Hands only" and before the fifth round "This is the Mental part" could not recall anything clear outside of that, would have loved for them just to have Khabib corner in-between every round and recall Javier telling him before the fifth they needed this round. I want to say he may have told Umar to wrestle before the start of the second or third though, I do recall thinking he said something weird, but can't recall what it was though.

The part which you mention about Islam controlling and not doing anything is when he had the back with a figure four on volkanovski.
That's the most dominant position a grappler can be in, can't be stood up and add to that Volk is a master at blocking chokes
However, Volk did dominate at the end of the fight but it was a 5 rounder and the fight ended so .....
I wont say it wasn't competitive but its wasn't close from a final score POV

Surprised I didn't see this posted more often here.

Khabib seemed to give objectively bad coaching. Obviously he knows his teammate and student best, but he did lose a winnable fight. Merab was literally clowning him and showboating during his wrestling attempts. All you're doing is draining your remaining energy while fighting a cardio machine.

Umar is the better striker and longer to boot - he need to hurt Merab and counter wrestle. Spending so much energy trying to wrestle offensively was a terrible game plan, and Khabib was the one pushing it.

He didn't win but he didn't really take any significant damage either. Merab was just a little bit more busier from round 3 on. I hardly call that winning a fight either.

Just winning a sports competition. In terms of damage Merab didn't do a whole lot. But he was dancing and prancing around like he one via destruction.

Delusional, he won 2 rounds. <KhabibBS>

I think he won round 4 as well as 1 and 2.

Damage trumps all is the rules. Apparently not though, as takedown attempts and pressure trump damage when it comes to judging in the last couple years.

Fight was close but not THAT close, a draw was the best he could had got out of it, just like 49-46 wasnt a good score either.

It was a clear 48-47. R1 and R5 were close but Umar and Merab made the difference over the last minute of each round

Apparently the translation was completely wrong from what I’ve read, khabib said stay on the feet and don’t initiate the wrestling but when you’re in the wrestling exchanges give everything you have to not lose them. UFC broadcast translators are complete ass lol.
so he had the right gameplan and still lost
