Billions continues to be fantastic every week.

Should be interesting that Wendy may end up with Taylor being the major blow to Axe of the season.
Was expecting that too. Glad the show subverted our expectations.

DEATHSTROKE Animated Series in the Works for CW Seed; Key Art Revealed

deathstroke_art.jpg

The CW announced at its upfront presentation Thursday that it's developing a series for its CW Seed digital platform based on the DC Comics character Deathstroke. The network is also developing a horror comedy called The Pledge from the writers of the last Saw film.

Deathstroke, aka Slade Wilson, has been a recurring character on Arrow (played by Manu Bennett) for much of that show's run. His presence diminished in recent years, however, as DC owner Warner Bros. began developing a Deathstroke feature film (which is now in limbo) following the character's appearance in Justice League. The DC movies and CW shows don't share continuity.

Animation doesn't have the same continuity concerns, however. The Deathstroke series would follow Slade as his family is threatened by the murderous villain Jackal and terrorist organization HIVE.

Deathstroke, should it go to series, would live on a different platform than Warner Bros. DC Universe streaming service. The latter is home to several original shows based on the DC canon, including Titans, Young Justice: Outsiders, Doom Patrol and the upcoming Swamp Thing.

Stephen King's EYES OF THE DRAGON Live-Action TV Series in the Works at Hulu

vS73SGn.jpg

For those wondering how they will possibly survive without Game of Thrones after Sunday’s finale, maybe there’s epic fantasy life beyond Westeros. How about an epic fantasy series adaptation of a bestselling Stephen King novel, one that taps into the mythology of King’s epic Dark Tower and even shares a major villain character from the author’s masterwork, The Stand? It has the requisite faeries, elves and dragons of the fantasy fare — sans the fiery genocide and sexual brutality that was a trademark of GOT.

Hulu has made a deal to develop a pilot based on the King novel Eyes of the Dragon, which was first published in 1984. Seth Grahame-Smith (Lego Batman Movie) is writing the opening episode and serving as the showrunner. Fox 21 is the studio. Grahame and his KatzSmith partner David Katzenberg will be exec producers along with Bill Haber, Roy Lee and Jon Berg.

Hulu competed with Apple for the rights and won the auction.

Dragon takes place in fictional realm of Delain and tells the story of power and the path of two prince brothers.

King Roland’s manipulative magician, Flagg, sees his power threatened when Queen Sasha gives birth to Peter, an heir to the throne. When the queen is pregnant with a second son, Flagg gets her midwife to mortally wound the queen and so begins his plot to dispose of the future king. Peter brings wine to his father’s bed chambers each night and Flagg poisons the potion and frames the son. The magician has meanwhile also been manipulating the younger son, Thomas, showing him secret passages where the boy can spy on his father. Thomas sees the murder of the king and the frameup of his brother, but is torn when Peter is found guilty and locked in an enormous tower. After all with Peter gone, he’s king at age 12. He allows Flagg widespread power that corrupts the kingdom. Meanwhile, Peter must attempt an escape to thwart Flagg and win back the throne.

King stepped out of the horror headspace when he wrote this book in 1984, mainly because he wanted to write something his kids could read. King’s hardcore horror fans screamed bloody murder — even though reviewers liked his literary detour into fantasy — and King addressed all that when he wrote Misery. Its plot — an author is stalked by a psycho fan upset her fave character was going to be killed — was a metaphor about King’s frustration of being shackled to scare fare.

Aquaman filmmaker James Wan and geek genre scribe Lindsey Beer are tackling The Magic Order, Netflix’s latest adaptation of a Mark Millar comic book series.

Wan will direct the debut episode of the series while Beer, who wrote the adaptation of upcoming film adaptation of Patrick Ness' science fiction series Chaos Walking, will write and act as showrunner. Both will be executive producing along with Millar.

Order was the first comic Millar, the co-creator of Kick-Ass and Wanted, put out after the digital streamer acquired his comics imprint, MillarWorld in 2017.

The multigenerational story follows five families of magicians who are sworn to defend the human world but are now being picked off one by one. Olivier Coipel was the artist.

Michael Clear, the head of production at Wan’s Atomic Monster production company, will executive produce. The company’s Rob Hackett will co-exec produce and oversee.

Beer wrote Netflix’s romantic comedy Sierra Burgess Is a Loser but has since been working steadily in the genre space. She worked on Chaos Walking, the Tom Holland-Daisy Ridley sci-fi YA thriller slated to be released in 2020, and worked on projects ranging from Spider-Man character Silver Sable to a Ninja Turtles reboot to the toy-branded M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Command. She also wrote an adaptation of Millar’s comic Empress.

As a producer, Wan has Swamp Thing, a series based on the DC character, debuting on DC Universe later this month, and the latest installment in The Conjuring Universe, Annabelle Comes Home, later this summer.

Some familiar faces are returning for Falcon & Winter Soldier, the upcoming Marvel Studios streaming series set to debut on Disney+.

Daniel Bruhl and Emily VanCamp are in talks to reprise their roles from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Also joining the project is director Kari Skogland, who is known for work on shows such as Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, for which she has earned Emmy and BAFTA nominations.

German star Bruhl appeared as the scheming villain Zemo in 2016'sCaptain America: Civil War, which saw him instigate a plot that tore the Avengers apart.

VanCamp appeared in Civil War after making her debut in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier as spy Sharon Carter, the grand niece of Captain America's (Chris Evans) former flame Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

Falcon & Winter Soldier will star MCU veterans Anthony Mackie (Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier). They last appeared in Avengers: Endgame, which saw Captain America pass the title on to Falcon.

"They have great chemistry," Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige told THR last month of the show's leading men. "You will see much more of that chemistry and learn much more about both of them."

The series is one of several Marvel Studios is developing for Disney+, including one starring Tom Hiddleston Loki, WandaVision, starring Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen, and a series centering on Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye.

Disney+ is set to launch Nov. 12. No release dates have been set for the Marvel streaming shows.

Game of Thrones Writer and Co-Executive Producer Joins LORD OF THE RINGS as Consultant

lx7nEFW.jpg

Bryan Cogman is trading one iconic fantasy world for another. Cogman, who most recently worked as a writer and co-executive producer on “Game of Thrones,” has signed on to consult on the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series at Amazon, Variety has learned from sources. He will work alongside the writing team of JD Payne and Patrick McKay, who were announced to be developing the series for Amazon back in July.

Cogman joins the series after having signed an overall deal with Amazon back in September. He began his time on “Game of Thrones” as the assistant to series creators and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. He was known for having an encyclopedic knowledge of the world of Westeros created by George R.R. Martin. The final episode he wrote for that series was the second episode of Season 8, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”

Cogman was also one of the writers chosen to develop a new series set in the “Game of Thrones” universe, but he confirmed in an interview with Variety in April that his project was not moving forward. He is also attached to write the screenplay for the new live-action version of “The Sword in the Stone.”

Little is known about the “Lord of the Rings” series beyond the fact it will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Variety exclusively reported in November 2017 that a “Lord of the Rings” series was in the works at Amazon, with the streamer announcing a a multi-season production commitment shortly thereafter. The series will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.
