International Trump: 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports will start Tuesday, with ‘no room’ for delay

What's the latest? I can't keep up anymore.
Trump issued a threat. Ford issued a counter threat, to which Trump responded with another threat, and Ford said, ok we'll just cut off the electricity altogether, how's that. Then Trump said, oh, hold on now, let's not get too excited, and backed down.

You gotta love the mind flashbanging, no one can keep up with what's happening or not happening. My prediction is the Thursday meeting is a flop and the tariffs come back on or go even higher on both sides.

This is ridiculous, Andrew. Ford put tariffs on to counter the incoming 25% tariffs. That was the point of the counter tariffs. Trump escalated, Ford backed down and we still have 25% tariffs coming our way. We got nothing but a meeting out of the deal. Something Ford could've gotten without the chest thumping. To call that a win for us, is absurd.

What's the implication of asking just the premier of Ontario to discuss an international trade deal concerning all of Canada?

Perhaps I'm reading this wrong but it seems like a giant middle finger to our federal government.
I don't think so. I don't necessarily agree with the action, but I'd attribute it to keeping up the fight for Canada as a whole while the new PM has a chance to get his shit together and get up to speed. I don't know this for certain, but I'd imagine that there was a lot of info Carney was not privy to until he became leader since he has no seat in the House, regardless of his prior roles.

As someone that leans right, it's unfortunate watching a legitimate mouth breathing retard like @cottagecheesefan continue to besmirch us all with his backwoods takes and down syndrome level of understanding on global trade and economics. Do all of us a favour (both left and right) and shut the fuck up.

He won't, he has become a willing vector of propaganda, foreign and otherwise.

Gas prices, inflation, etc say otherwise. Sorry it triggers you that you fall for the same hysteria as the #blueAnons

I have to retract the comment, actually. I skimmed a bit and misinterpreted his intent. I understand it now to read it as saying the FAFO is on the part of Trump, not because of him. Silly early morning mistake on my part.

this is ridiculous Heretic.

Ford was in many interviews stating he did not want to put the tariffs on. He stated clearly that this dispute was not about fentanyl and was about Trump not remembering he negotiated and signed USMCA and now wanted a new deal to replace the 'shit deal' Trump put together.

Ford was clear that his tariffs were an attempt to get Trump to the table NOW, and to not sit and wait until April with the uncertainty hurting the economy in the meantime.

So when Trump then caved and had his guy reach out to Ford and say 'hey lets sit down and hash this out', Ford suspended the Tariffs while saying he would put them back on if these talks were engaged in, in good faith.

Ford's entire position is 'I will do X if you do not do Y' and Trump and his team did Y. They caved.

Trump is making a big mistake with Canada. Canada will continue to retaliate. If Trump doesn't stop Canada might start banning US products entirely. Canadians absolutely refuse to buy anything American already, and this has just begun. Bad move by Trump unless Canada caves, which likely won't happen

Makes more sense why Ford "backed down".

We shall see how Thursday goes. I still don't trust Doug Ford.

Lutnick, the person representing the US tomorrow, went on Fox Business this morning to reiterate that Canada should become the 51st state lol

David Eby, Premier of BC comes out today with regard to the Chinese tariffs and says we need to negotiate with them, drop our tariffs on them so there can be fair trade.

Why in the flying fuck do you not have the same thoughts towards the US ? This should be all the proof you need to see the Canadian government is trying to make this situation as bad as they can for their own political gain.

Because one is the devil you know, and the other flip flops every fucking day like a senile retard that can't be trusted.

Both are shitty but one has a sense of stability.

Oh okay so no attempt should be made to negotiate with the US, we should just sell out our own people to try and get votes, great fucking plan.

WTF are you talking about?

Canada and the US have a "fair trade" deal with the US that Trump negotiated called the USMCS.

how the fuck do you now know that?

Trump is violating his own Trade deal with these tariffs when the deal was up for full mandatory re negotiation next year.

Canada DOES NOT want the tariffs in eithe direction and wants them all dropped and for USMCA to be honored. But even more so Canada is willing to renegotiate a year early NOW, if that is what the US wants.

So wtf do you mean when you say "Why in the flying fuck do you not have the same thoughts towards the US ?"

Are you fuckin brain damaged?

The entire Canadian position has been 'lets negotiate NOW, and not wait until April and lets not do any tariffs. If we have to redo USMCA a year early...lets do it'

Trump is the one who put tariffs on, and said he would not negotiate until April and Doug Ford said i am retaliating and will not pull my tariffs unless the Trump admin is willing to sit down and negotiate.

Doug Ford then got a call from the Trump admin to come down for some negotiations, so he suspended ONtarios tariffs.

holy fuck man, WE ARE ESCALATING A TRADE WAR WITH THE US WHILE TRYING TO DE-ESCALATE WITH CHINA.

Maybe trying to deescalate with both would be ideal ?

Guy loses credibility with me the instant he says we have no economic leverage against the US. He might be right about the main point he's trying to make--I wouldn't know because I didn't listen long enough to find out, but that's a glaring error.

Let's ask the state of Kentucky how they feel about the loss of all liquor sales to Canada. Or electricity consumers in US states that border Canada how they'd feel if we cut off their power. The list goes on. Canada's approach is very carefully targeted at what will have the greatest effect.
Further to this, I guess we know now how Americans feel about the idea of us cutting off their electricity. <BC1>
