I genuinely like Islam as a fighter and think he is obviously one of the best guys in the sport.

But his record as a defending champ is trash. Two wins over a FW half his size, one of those getting humbled in the 5th the other when said midget was clearly not in fight shape. And a win over an shopworn vet who had absolutely no business getting a title shot after just getting knocked out and beating someone not in the top 10.

He still has not defended his belt against a deserved, genuine LW contender. No amount of 'leave Islam alone' apologia will change that until he addresses it.

Why would this make a difference to people ideologically opposed to Makhachev? Fight results, performances, and all of that doesn't matter to them. If you hate Muslims or Russians, nothing that Makhachev does will change that.

There's a difference between hating a guy and not respecting his performances/skills/accomplishments/legacy.

You can hate a guy for several reasons like not liking their fight style, look, behavior, politics, etc AND STILL respect their performances/skills/accomplishments/legacy. When discussing their fights, you can still produce solid evidence based arguments even if you dont like the fighter. I am not talking about these people and I am not saying that all the people who dont like Makhachev are like that.

I am talking about a specific subset of posters who hate Makhachev because of his religion, nationality, or whatever and they let that dictate how they judge his performances/skills/career/legacy and what not. These are basically not interested in the fights at all, only in ways they can spin anything in a negative light. They wont change their minds.
