But his record as a defending champ is trash. Two wins over a FW half his size, one of those getting humbled in the 5th the other when said midget was clearly not in fight shape. And a win over an shopworn vet who had absolutely no business getting a title shot after just getting knocked out and beating someone not in the top 10.

He still has not defended his belt against a deserved, genuine LW contender. No amount of 'leave Islam alone' apologia will change that until he addresses it.

There's a difference between hating a guy and not respecting his performances/skills/accomplishments/legacy.

You can hate a guy for several reasons like not liking their fight style, look, behavior, politics, etc AND STILL respect their performances/skills/accomplishments/legacy. When discussing their fights, you can still produce solid evidence based arguments even if you dont like the fighter. I am not talking about these people and I am not saying that all the people who dont like Makhachev are like that.

I am talking about a specific subset of posters who hate Makhachev because of his religion, nationality, or whatever and they let that dictate how they judge his performances/skills/career/legacy and what not. These are basically not interested in the fights at all, only in ways they can spin anything in a negative light. They wont change their minds.

8 pounds can be two weight classes in boxing. Weight is also not the only component of size.

I dislike how people bring up Makhachev first title defense against Volkanovski like he hand picked him. Dana already set it in stone that winner between Oliviera vs Makhachev was set to face Volkanovski. The 2nd go around the Charles Oliviera fucked up by having idiotic training practices, I personally think Oliviera shouldn't have ever gotten the rematch, it should've been Justin Gaethje.

UFC & Matchmakers, Oliviera and in a sense Makhachev are all to blame, I put little blame on Makhachev because of his time frame for fights due to his religion, but he seems to be working on that currently.
