You might be confusing with fake badasses, they are always insecure, super common.

But in my experience most real badasses I met (pro fighters, special forces operators, racing drivers, etc) are usually fairly self confident, humble and downplaying their badassery. Not all of course … some are more Tim-like.

I get your sentiments and I can agree that there are very legit bad asses out there, who aren't what I describe .... But a vast majority of badasses and tough guys and military dudes and special forces geeks are insecure as fuck.
