Opinion This Administration stripped funding and fired people that would have warned about this.

So you would say that there is no connection between cutting nws funding and staff, which historically supports local agencies and entities in better communicating flood warnings, and a tragedy involving insufficient warnings about a flood?

You think its unfair of me to state there's a *connection* between these things?

Tisk, tisk...
Do you have a source for there were "insufficient warnings"?

Yeah, there are a lot of em, i wont post any links, you can find them pretty easily. It seems likely that the breakdown here came from a lack of local warning reception. This was said to be related to "warning fatigue" on the part of the communities, and also of a lack of a cohesive warning system.

Nws historically has helped with the 2nd part.

Im not drawing a direct connection from this to trump, and I see that TS gpt a little carried away, but his admirable acknowledgement of this and apology has resulted in thr pendulum swinging too far back the other way and people claiming its ridiculous to assert any connection.

The regular crowd of rowdies in here got a little too carried away themselves, and some more discussion was needed

I have a reasonablenposition on this. I never said this was directly trumps fault. Its too complex a situation to say aoemtbing like that. However, it was definitely a factor that could have helped. Maybe it wouldn't have. We can't say, just as we can't say any one individual cigarette is the one that gives someone lung cancer, but yo claim that there is therefore "no connection" between smoking and cancer is absurd.

Debate erupts over role job cuts played in weather forecasts ahead of deadly Texas floods

https://apnews.com/article/weather-...ce-hurricane-4740019969a6b7a1b566e98dcb85562b

Questions linger about level of coordination

Questions remain, however, about the level of coordination and communication between NWS and local officials on the night of the disaster. The Trump administration has cut hundreds of jobs at NWS, with staffing down by at least 20% at nearly half of the 122 NWS field offices nationally and at least a half dozen no longer staffed 24 hours a day. Hundreds more experienced forecasters and senior managers were encouraged to retire early.

The White House also has proposed slashing its parent agency’s budget by 27% and eliminating federal research centers focused on studying the world’s weather, climate and oceans.

Cuts resulted from Republican effort to privatize duties of weather agencies

The cuts follow a decade-long Republican effort to dismantle and privatize many of the duties of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the agency within the Commerce Department that includes the NWS. The reductions have come as Trump has handed top public posts to officials with ties to private companies that stand to profit from hobbling the taxpayer-funded system for predicting the weather.

Trump officials say they didn’t fire meteorologists

At a pair of Congressional hearings last month, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick called it “fake news” that the Trump administration had axed any meteorologists, despite detailed reporting from The Associated Press and other media organizations that chronicled the layoffs.

Despite a broad freeze on federal hiring directed by Trump, NOAA announced last month it would seek to fill more than 100 “mission-critical field positions,” as well as plug holes at some regional weather offices by reassigning staff. Those positions have not yet been publicly posted, though a NOAA spokesperson said Sunday they would be soon.

Here’s a recent development out of Austin

The Fire Chief denied a request by the State of Texas on July 2nd to pre-deploy special teams due to the storm

Austin Firefighters are fixing to oust him.

This Chief actually did cause the deaths of victims

Asshat… the warnings went out.

There’s no debate.

So you don’t care if more specific weather disaster warnings can be issued even earlier? As long as they “went out”? In deadly flash floods, just as in hurricanes, the more public forewarning and guidance and response time and effort, the better. Better prediction, better preparation, minimize casualties.

This is gross and people that knew how to stop it were fired. Kids. This is cutting funds. This is not giving people a heads up. R.I.P.

Words don’t work on the people who support Trump. No matter what he does, it’s fine with them. He closed the pandemic response program ahead of a major pandemic and they didn’t even blink. As if they will give a shit about gutting disaster relief programs.

Try doing 30 seconds of reading before outing yourself as an ignorant retard

Too late this time... but try it next time

Well there is a Republican Georgia Congressional candidate who says this entire thing is fake, and MTG says she is going to ban storm creation. FEMA is non-existent so it wont cost us anything, amirite? I mean we can just roll with all that since apathy is cool, and it sounds a while lot better than admitting Texas is a dumpster fire when it comes to disaster response and the Federal Government doesnt give a sh*t

the repukes never seem to miss an opportunity to take a tragedy and create their own conspiracy theories while dancing on dead peoples graves.

never fails.

Conspiracy Theories About the Texas Floods Lead to Death Threats

Disinformation around a “weather weapon” and cloud seeding is being widely promoted by everyone from anti-government extremists to GOP influencers—leading to real-world consequences.

On Sunday afternoon, Michael Meyer, the founder of anti-government extremist group Veterans on Patrol, posted a warning on his Telegram channel.

“Due to the recent weather weapon deployed against Texas, which resulted in a high number of child murders, efforts to eliminate this military treason are being escalated,” Meyer, who is commonly known as Lewis Arthur, wrote.
