It's not that they are dumb, though. At least not exclusively. The glue that holds it together is that they are shameless, selfish, and unprincipled. Just look at the higher-end Trump supporters here: they know that he's a moron, they don't even attempt to defend his policies on their merit (@kpt018's thread on the GOP Tax Scam had fucking tumbleweeds), and they know he's lying and that his actions and policies don't have any actual justifications. But it doesn't matter. It's about their side. There is literally nothing that he could do that would get them to vote for the other side.

"I really want to do this because I promised my base, and they might defect if I don't come through, even though it was supposed to be Mexico that paid" is not a valid national emergency.

The only thing I do know is that Trump expects a challenge from the courts.

And for him to say "I hope we get a fair shake" when it reaches the SCOTUS, tells me he's not confident he will win.

Considering he's gotten two appointments to that court, including one that he shouldn't have, already hemming and hawing means he thinks its DOA.

And it should be.

The idea that he declare a national emergency after the congressional debate on the subject when the entire purpose of the ability to declare an emergency is to deal with an issue that doesn't permit time for Congress to debate.
