Economy The [Wall / Government Shutdown] Megathread

Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

It’s not a good look for Trump for sure, but experts in border security are in a majority agreement the wall (barrier) will help, so there’s that

They're in agreement that barriers help, not a barrier or wall.

The idea of a continuous border wall is stupid and should be discarded pretty readily by anyone that cares to think about it.

I think the exact opposite is going to happen. The wall is currently being rebuilt and prepared.

The 1.3 billion is enough money to keep construction going until the emergency declaration works it's way through the courts where he will win. Just in time to amp up production before 2020 run.

I really don't understand why people are so confident Trump will lose in the courts.

The dude is going to go emergency or executive order route and has a majority in the scotus....maybe a larger one by the time it reaches them

While I agree, I’m also good with our tax dollars funding a wall.

It was a bad look for Trump to promise that Mexico would pay for the wall. I figured he would come up with some way to have them end up paying for it. That being said, the money he wants for it is a drop in the bucket of our overall budget.

If we aren’t going to fund and man the border agents adequately, a barrier can at least help them in places they can’t afford to cover.

So, even though it is a stain on Trumps reputation, I’m fine with my taxes covering the wall.
Hilarity will ensue if Ted Cruz pulls it off and gets a Mexican pay for the wall.

The republicans controlled every branch of government for 2 years and they didn’t pass a wall budget.

Stop blaming democrats for your failures. Republicans didn’t want this shit either

You do realize that Trump will blame any negative fallout on the Dems and Republican who were in the negotiations. He will claim it was their fault and not his.

Oh yeah I know Trump will claim that, but I think this is one that he can't excuse away and is really going to resonate negatively with a certain percentage of people who support him.

The whole Trump administration is a victory for the Democratic party it shows everything the Republican party ever claimed to have stood for was complete and total bullsh*t, from family values to America's place in the world they have been exposed for the 2 bit hypocritical frauds they have been since Nixon. Btw Republicans on Shertard and everywhere else be prepared to hear BUT TRUMP!!!!!! for the rest of your natural days and nobody deserves to hear those 2 words more than yourselves. 1......2..........3......... BUT TRUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the fact that Mexico is not paying for the wall will be ignored by most of Trump's fans. They are willing to overlook it as long as some part of the wall starts getting built.

However, I think the biggest victory for Democrats will be at the end of this tax season. People are realizing that Trump's tax plan is hurting them financially. Seeing a smaller tax refund or even owing more to the IRS is something that has a real painful impact in the lives of voters. Many middle class voters are going to feel the strain, and I think many middle class voters that are Independent are going to remember this when they make up their minds about who to vote for.

Yeah but Billy Bob should have budgeted that $20 more per paycheck after the tax breaks so he could have paid it back to the gubment.

Not Trump's fault!

I like the enthusiasm but at the end of the day, the perception of the Republican Party will not matter as their base will shift with the party.

True but even though the scotus majority is conservative, they may care more about the big picture.

If you think about it, ruling in favor of this would expand the powers of the president and (in an indirect way) reduce powers of other branches of government... including the scotus itself.

I think if it actually made it that far, they may not want to set a precedent for democrats to do the same thing when they eventually control the White House at some point.

Trump definitely won the wall fight...because despite the fact there will be no wall, the libs got no daca.

I must have missed the part where a bunch of democrats campaigned on DACA... The wall was literally the cornerstone of the sham Trump campaign and he couldn't come through. Couldn't come through on the wall, hasn't repealed or replaced Obamacare and those were his 2 biggest fake promises.

Funny thing is that Trump had 25 billion for the wall last year. Now he has less than 2 billion. The guy is a joke negotiator lol

It’s not Trumps fault, he wasn’t in the negotiating room therefore he could flex his skills.

It’s funny how most everyone from politicians to other governments know how to deal with Trump and his negotiating style.

True but you can't win a national election with just your base, besides I wanted Hillary to win more than anything but now that I look back maybe Trump being in the WH was for the best. If Hillary won by now the Republicans would be on their 15th Benghazi investigation, their 10th BUT HER EMAILS!!!!! investigation, there would be serious impeachment talks by now if they hadn't started already.

The Republicans were never ever, ever, ever going to appoint anybody Hillary nominated to the Supreme Court to fill Scalia's vacancy, between the neverending investigations, not being able to put anybody to the Supreme Court and overall obstruction. The midterms would have been an epic disaster for the Democrats, the Republicans would have gained at least a dozen more seats in the House and a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, Hillary would have been a guaranteed 1 term President.

With Trump in the WH the American people finally have to take off the rose colored glasses and truly see the Republican party for what it is, a motley collection of ignorant hillbillies, , religious hypocritical phonies and Right Wing billionaire donors calling the shots. Besides we get to have the joy of telling the 63 million people who voted for Trump I TOLD YOU!!!!. Even more importantly we get to spend the next 50 years screaming BUT TRUMP!!!!!

Yeh...maybe that will happen, but I wouldn't bet on it and I'm not sure why anyone else would. Is say it's more likely that it is upheld based on my reading of the law and the make up of the court.

So once again everyone is celebrating but Trump now has the dough to break new ground and good odds he'll get all those other billions right around the time he needs it most

Sounds like he's going to declare a national emergency and sign the deal. And his loyal servant Mitch is going along with it. Gonna be hilarious listening to him try to justify this shit.
